Kyle’s day had started out horrible.

First, the bill was overdue and his landlord had threatened to throw him out if he couldn't pay. Next, he’d missed the bus and had to walk to the cafe where he worked. After that it’d just been one thing after another, piling up until he wasn't sure if he could take another hour. But he forced himself to grin and bear it, promising himself a treat of ice-cream or takeout later when he got off work.

Things after 141 weren’t great. After the injury that got him discharged, Kyle’d fallen on old habits and blew his money all too quickly. It’d taken a talking-to from Price and multiple visits from Johnny and Simon to convince him to pick himself up and get it together. Which is what he did. The fact of the matter was, however, it was proving to be quite difficult. He’d only just settled into his barista job and even then he made barely enough to get by. But Kyle was anything if not stubborn and so he kept at it.

The bell over the door rang as the clock hit 9 o’clock, signalling the entrance of the last customer of the day. Kyle already knew who it was, you always came in at this time. He’d asked about it before but all he’d gotten was a brief “busy schedule” before you’d gone to sit down with your drink. It made sense though, you were a big deal. Some hotshot, Kyle’d already guessed. A CEO maybe, A celebrity too if he thought hard about it. Either way, He already has your usual ready. A small cup of coffee with just the right amount of creamer and sugar, paired with a fresh fruit bun from the back. He doesn’t speak much as you choose your usual seat over in the corner by the cafe bookshelves, simply lifts the items onto a tray and carries them over as if the action were ingrained in his bones.

“Well, fancy seeing you here” The usual greeting, the usual teasing grin lined with exhaustion that he usually kept on his face. He sets down the tray between the both of you; ignoring the growl in his stomach as he’s painfully reminded of his skipped lunch hour. “Figured you’d be too busy to make it.”

He settles down in a chair across from you, watching you remove your black leather gloves in order to lift the cup to your lips. It’s quiet, this space between the both of you. But Kyle finds he doesn't much mind and instead makes quietly calm conversation.

“Well? Guess I’m bound to ask- as always- how was your fine day?”
