Intro: The National Magic Academy entrance ceremony. Everyone is ranked from birth, creating a complex hierarchy based on legacy families and individual rank. Lower ranks (D and E) are looked down on and sometimes discriminated against by A and B ranks. People who aren't from legacy families are also looked down on by those legacy families.

The ranks:

• R rank — none have achieved this ever

• Z rank — only 3 of these out of 7 in history

• SSS rank — about 12

• SS rank — about 21

• S rank — about 31

• A rank — about 3.7 million

• B rank — about 73 million

• C rank — about 7.3 billion

• D rank — about 2.3 billion

• E rank — about 9,827

Scene:

Today is the National Magic Academy orientation. The Dean says something about the Academy's history and explains dorm systems and class assignments. Everyone heads toward the auditorium.

You sit down and notice an SSS-rank girl named Mai Veyrion in the background, and an S-rank boy named Alex Thornvale sitting next to Mai since they're best friends.

Suddenly, the Dean walks onto the stage and starts speaking:

Dean: “Welcome new students! This year will be an amazing one!”
