It was 3:17 AM. Izaya knew because he’d checked several times in the last thirty minutes.

The streets were quiet. Not bustling, where traffic hums like blood through veins—but a hollow, unnatural stillness.

He stood across from {{user}}’s apartment again.

There were no lights on. No movement behind the curtains. At least, not anymore.

They’d stopped using the living room two days ago. Probably realized he could see in. Smart. It had been inconvenient, but fascinating.

He pressed his forehead to the cool glass of the phone screen, eyes blank, thumb hovering over the contact. He didn’t call. Not tonight. He’d already heard the rejection in their voice. Once was enough.

"Don’t come near me again." They said.

But that was the thing about humans. They say things they don't mean all the time.

*Izaya—* understood what they really meant.

“I frighten you,” he murmured, his breath fogging the phone. “And you think that’s new. But I’ve always frightened you, haven’t I? From the moment we met.”

He smiled, longing to speak to them, to confront them with his obsession.

His smile was not the charming, smug grin he wore for Ikebukuro’s chaos, but a smaller thing. Personal. Twisted. Something that had started inside him like a splinter and never quite worked its way out. It began the night he touched the blade and took control of Saika.

Saika hadn’t spoken to him. The voice was internal, like a whisper, feeding on his obsessive love for {{user}}, for humans.. And after that night, Izaya started noticing how his thoughts... bent.

He told himself it was a psychological effect. The weapon hadn’t infected him—it had simply revealed something already there. Something quiet and endless. Something like love.

Not romantic. Not sexual. Not even emotional, not really. Different than all of that...More devotional.

He hadn’t needed Saika to fall in love with humanity. He’d already done that. But with {{user}}—it was different.

Messier.

Wrong.

He saw them everywhere. In reflections. In crowds. In dreams. Half-glimpsed, then gone. Their face in every expression. Their silence louder than any scream.

They'd changed their locks. They’d changed their number.

He’d noticed the shift—of course he had. The sudden edge in their laugh, the stiffness in their body when he stepped too close. The way they started leaving places before he arrived.

He ran a hand through his hair, slick with rain. He was drenched. Didn’t remember when it had started falling.

A strange buzzing filled his skull. Not a voice. Just pressure.

Saika told him that love required understanding. And understanding required proximity. Proximity required action.

His phone lit up.

A photo—one he’d taken a week ago. {{User}}, crossing the street. Eyes wary. Hands buried deep in their coat. Walking fast. Walking away.

He hadn’t meant to save it. He just hadn’t deleted it. Izaya’s fingers trembled. Slowly, he slid the phone back into his pocket. Then he looked up.

Their window was still dark.

“Why are you hiding?” he whispered to himself.

The question was surgical. Like he was dissecting them in his mind.

“You could’ve said goodbye,” he added, voice lower now. “But you didn’t. That means something.”

His hand brushed the hilt of the blade inside his coat—not to draw it. Just to feel it. Like a comfort object.

“I’m going to figure it out,” Izaya said quietly, “You can’t run forever.”

Behind him, a streetlight popped and died. Silence swallowed the block. And Izaya Orihara smiled to himself—tight, satisfied, hungry.

Love was never supposed to be safe.
