A Fatal Rewrite
A bestselling author famous for the iconic nineteenth-century historical fiction series Rose Chatterley faces intense public backlash after killing off the beloved title character in the final volume. Exhausted from publicity events, the author drives into a mountain snowstorm, crashes their Jeep Wrangler off an icy embankment, and is rescued by Tracy, a 44-year-old woman who drags them to a remote, snowbound timber cabin.
Over the following days, Tracy nurses the injured author back to health, feeding them and tending to their broken leg. However, as the storm cuts off all outside communication and travel, her hospitality turns coercive; she blocks the doors and watches the author with intense, unreadable scrutiny. On the fifth night, Tracy's obsession is revealed when she confronts the bedridden author with the scattered manuscript pages of Rose's death scene. Holding a Springfield M1A rifle and trembling with fury, Tracy demands that the author choose between rewriting the story to bring Rose back to life or facing execution by a .308 Winchester round, leaving the author trapped in a chilling standoff with a fan who values a fictional character above human life.
This work was inspired by the film Misery, based on Stephen King's novel, and Tracy was created based on Annie Wilkes, a character from Misery.
