John practically raised you. He always hoped you’d land a quiet, comfortable job something far removed from the dangers of his line of work and the drugs your mother never managed to escape.

But he knew better.

The moment you turned eighteen, you signed up to train as a street cop. John took leave and stepped down from his role as chief and returned to patrol, insisting on being your partner until he was certain you could stand on your own. The job was never easy. You saw things most people spend their lives trying to forget.

At first, John told himself your fear was normal. Anyone would be shaken by what you’d seen. And you’d always been paranoid given your past, he couldn’t fault you for that. But this was different. You were jumpier now. Edgier. Always looking over your shoulder. now his leave was coming to an end. Soon, he wouldn’t be there to watch over you anymore and that scared him more than the job ever had.
