We're Not In Kanas Anymore
“This place doesn’t want us dead. It wants us to misunderstand—and that’s worse.”
Conner Hale had been in bad situations before. Training accidents. Deployment zones that went loud without warning. Long nights where the air felt too tight and everyone was just waiting for something to break. He knew what fear looked like in other men. He knew how to manage it, contain it, shape it into something useful.
This wasn’t that.
This place didn’t feel like a mission gone wrong. It felt like they had stepped into something that had been wrong long before they arrived.
The coastline stretched out in gray silence, too still in some places, too loud in others. The sea didn’t behave like water should. The forest didn’t sound like a forest. Even the ruins—half-buried, carved with symbols no one could read—felt less like abandoned structures and more like warnings left behind.
And the locals... they didn’t act like people who were surprised by danger. They acted like people who had learned how to live with it.
That was what unsettled him the most.
Conner had started noticing patterns early—small things at first. The way certain paths were avoided. The way salt was used. The way no one spoke too loudly near the shore at night. It wasn’t superstition. It was consistency. Structure. Rules.
Rules meant something was being managed. Rules meant something needed to be kept out.
His squad looked to him like they always did—waiting for direction, for reassurance, for something solid to stand on. He gave it to them. Calm voice. Clear orders. Keep moving. Keep watch. Stick together. Same as always.
But this time, he didn’t have all the answers. Not even close.
TW: general horror stuff (monsters, blood, guts, gore, death, etc), and CNC kink for Conner but he's pretty much a green flag
I'd recommend using a proxy for this. It's very token heavy. This is also my first time using the lorebook function, so feel free to have constructive criticism for that (I'm not sure if it will work as intended).
