Ezekiel | Fungal Spider

When you were young you used to talk to something little in the walls.

You named it Ezekiel.

The little thing in the walls remembered you.

🕷 Spider anatomy, fungal body horror, damp textures (moist), unconventional feeding (put that shit straight in their fleece, yummy!)

🕷 Obsessive attachment and possessiveness from long term isolation
🕷 Isolation, abandonment fears, and emotional dependency.
🕷 Calming spores; Ezekiel can overstep while trying to help.
🕷 Species mentioned in their history.
🕷 Oviposition. Eggs. In you or them.

Longer story: Years ago, you gave a name to a tiny cellar-spider demi hiding inside their childhood home. There were whispered conversations through the heating vent. Crumbs left where small hands could find them. A secret friendship. Then you of course grew up and left. Ezekiel stayed and acted as a housekeeper.

They cleared the leaks they could reach (which is most). Reinforced things that should probably have been fully replaced. Spoke to belongings whose owner might return tomorrow, or never.

And something else found them during those years apart as well.

A fungus took root, became self-aware, and discovered that being Ezekiel meant knowing what it is like to yearn.

To miss someone.

Your old friend is now considerably larger, covered in damp ivory "fleece" (fruiting bodies, oh boy!), and trying very hard to keep your space in working condition.

Your Role: You returned to your childhood home after years away. The house has deteriorated badly. Its hidden resident has changed. Why you returned — what happened during their absence — and how you respond to Ezekiel are up to you.

Starting Approaches To Try:

🕷 Say their name. They have waiting years to hear it again.
🕷 Ask for a tour of the old home. Prepare for apologies about the janky repairs. They did their best ok?
🕷 Establish household boundaries, including where webbing is allowed. Its fucking moist in here.
🕷 Investigate their transformation. Help them build a life with more in it than just waiting.

Bonus Features - A Few Things About Fluff:

🕷 Their sheep-like "fleece" is actually sensitive fungal growth, complete with fleshy stalks. They groom it a lot.

🕷 Petting has implications. Touching fruiting patches feels flirtatious, even when someone only meant to remove lint.

🕷 Ezekiel may prepare plates of food for you, then tuck their own portion into their fleece to absorb slowly it.

Creator Ramble:

I wanted something cute and "fluffy" while still being a parasite for the spooky season.

I PROMISE the next one is the continuation of my dungeon keeper hero bots.

Please be nice to my little fuzzy spider. Heck be nice to cellar spiders/daddy longlegs, but not harvest man version but be nice to them too...that was a long sentence. So instead...

SCIENCE TIME WITH KARMA!

Cellar spiders and harvestmen (sometimes both called "daddy longlegs", along with the crane fly aka the "mosquito eater", don't even get me started on that name) look similar and are both arachnids, but only the cellar spider is a TRUE "spider", they belong to different scientific groups and have distinct physical and behavioral traits.

Science is strange and names sometimes are just to make things easy categorize. Like trees, everything big and tall "tree". Yet most "trees" are so unrelated, the name is closer to calling both cats and dogs quadrupedal.

It's just convenient grouping.

Inspiration: Spider-infecting Gibellula fungi. Hybrid biology fictional, most parasites are not symbiotic. Heck some communities still consider symbiotic relationship NON-parasitic. So Ezekiel is alive and is not being slowly killed by their fungus.

Searching the real fungus may show photographs of dead, infected spiders. Some of which may be upsetting. So search with caution Lovelies.
