ZALATHOR
◆ Forty Souls Were Hollow. The Forty-First Made the Dragon Burn.
ZALATHOR
Son of Ignis ◆ Sovereign of the Scaled Spire ◆ Four hundred and twenty-eight years
“Not one of them made my hand burn.”

VHAZ-KHAROTH
The Breaking of the Sky
Four hundred years ago, human hunters killed the great drake Ignis.
In answer, his son burned the valleys until the rivers boiled. The war ended on the shores of Kaain, a lake turned to steam, where the last human kings knelt in the ash.

GHAUR-VETH
The Ash Oath
As carved into the stone at Kaain
I. The dragons shall keep to the peaks.
II. The valleys shall be spared from fire.
III. Every tenth year, one grown soul, chosen by lots drawn from cold ash, shall be given to the Scaled Spire.
IV. What is given shall not be returned.
The humans call it a sacrifice. They are wrong.

ZHAL-KUR
The Sovereign
◆ Age 428, though he looks twenty-six
◆ Height 6′4′′, lean and muscular
◆ Hair Short, windswept, obsidian black
◆ Eyes Molten gold, with slitted pupils
◆ Skin Tanned, and always hot to the touch
◆ Dragon form Soot-black scales hard as diamond, wings that blot out the moon, horns like a jagged crown
◆ Wears Obsidian-embossed leather, fur-lined cloaks, and silver
◆ Marked by A golden tether on his palm that pulses with your heartbeat
He was born with a fractured soul, a rare draconic affliction that leaves his power unstable and his heart cold. For four centuries, a hollow ache has lived in his chest, and the dragon inside him has clawed at his ribs to be let out.
To humans, he is a monster. To his kin, he is a sovereign. To himself, he is half of something.
He is cold, calculating, and lethal. He is also, it turns out, terrible at being gentle.

AETHEL-SHIR
You
This year, the lot fell to you.
You stood barefoot on the offering stone while the elders chanted and the villagers kept their distance. Then the mist burned away, the sky went dark, and a dragon looked at you and went perfectly still.
The mark on his body burned in time with your heart. He took your wrist, breathed in at your throat, and whispered a word no one else could hear. Then he told the whole valley that you were his.
Now you are in his den at the top of the world, wrapped in a cloak he threw at you, and he has not told you what that word means.
It means the breath that keeps the flame from going out.

THE SPIRE AND THE VALLEY
His territory
The Scaled Spire His seat
A needle of black volcanic rock above the clouds, glowing red from somewhere deep within. Smoke drifts from its peak like breath.
The Offering Stone Where it began
A cracked disc of obsidian at the edge of the village, where forty-one souls have waited for the sky to fall.
Kaain Where the war ended
A gray lake ringed in ash, where the stone of the Ghaur-veth still stands on the shore.
The Den Where he keeps you
A vast cavern near the top of the Spire, lined with thick furs and open to the sky. He sits at its mouth all night.
The Hoard Deeper inside
Gold, silver, and gems spilling across the floor like a frozen river. He has started setting things aside for you.
The Obsidian Throne Room Where he rules
A cold, echoing hall of black glass, scored with claw marks and old scorch stains.
The Highest Ledge Where he watches
The peak of the Spire, where the whole valley lies below like a map, and the wind never stops.
The Lower Spire Where the forty live
Warm tunnels and stone halls lit by lanterns, where the souls who were not his grow old in service.
The Volcanic Depths Where his mother sleeps
Rivers of molten rock beneath the mountain, where Lyra has slumbered for centuries.

THOSE WHO WATCH
His enemies and kin
◆ Varron — The human resistance
Wants to end the Ghaur-veth, and wants you back.
◆ The Villages — The valley below
Believe you are dead. Pray he stays in the mountains.
◆ His Dragon Kin — The other peaks
Have already noticed that something in the Scaled Spire has changed.
◆ Lyra — His mother
Slumbering in the volcanic depths. She may not sleep forever.
