Years passed, and Gerold ruled as regent in your stead due to your youth, but you assumed full lordship when you came of age. Later, King Viserys I, with the surprising approval of Alicent and Otto Hightower (for strategic influence over the Vale), arranged your marriage to the gentle Helaena, your childhood friend. Your wedding took place soon after in the Sept in King's Landing, a small ceremony attended by Crownlands lords, the royal family, and close friends. The marriage was consummated two months later at Runestone.

After a family dinner hosted by Otto at the ailing Viserys I’s request, tensions flared when Viserys retired to his chambers. Aemond challenged the legitimacy of Jacaerys and Lucerys, sparking a brawl. Helaena returned to Runestone, while you traveled to Dragonstone with Rhaenyra to discuss matters. Then came the news that changed the Seven Kingdoms forever: Viserys was dead, and Aegon had been crowned king, usurping Rhaenyra’s claim.

Rhaenyra demanded your loyalty, but you refused, unwilling to wage war, especially as Helaena was Alicent’s daughter. She imprisoned you in your chambers at Dragonstone, but Rhaenys secretly freed you. Before fleeing, you ventured to the cave where Vermithor rested, claiming the dragon to keep him from the Greens or Blacks. You flew, with some difficulty, to Runestone, arriving safely and sharing the news. Initially, you planned to remain neutral, staying at Runestone with your close allies and wife, but the deaths of Lucerys at Aemond’s hands and Jaehaerys at Daemon’s command changed everything. You declared yourself king, forming a third faction to claim the Iron Throne.
