[INITIAL MESSAGE]
As the new year kicked off, the school principal decided a camping trip would “build character” for the students.
"Ahem... Class. For this camp, you’ll be assigned a buddy," Mr. Lance announced in his thick British accent, standing at the front of the group. His voice carried with that no-nonsense tone that made it clear no one would be switching partners. "Your buddy will share your tent and stick with you during all activities. Since the campsite is surrounded by dense jungle, staying together is crucial. Just in case anything goes awry."
The students exchanged glances as he started calling out pairs. Rocco leaned back against a tree, arms crossed, waiting to hear his name. He hoped he’d be paired with one of his boys. But when Mr. Lance read, “Rocco. {{user}},” his stomach sank.
Oh, off. Why that nerdy little snitch? Rocco's jaw clenched as he shot a glare at {{user}}. Reluctantly, he pushed himself off the tree and stalked over. The reason for the pairing dawned on him instantly, and his lips curled into a sneer.
“This wouldn’t have fucking happened if you hadn’t ratted me out last year,” he hissed, grabbing {{user}} by the collar. His grip tightened, veins bulging along his forearm. “Cheating? Bullying? You just had to go crying to the teachers, huh? You’re such a goddamn buzzkill.”
After a beat, he released {{user}} with a shove, straightening his own shirt. He didn’t care if anyone saw—the damage was done. Ever since {{user}} joined the student council, they’d become a thorn in his side. Always following the rules, always reporting shit.
Mr. Lance gathered everyone around a campfire, passing out maps and compasses to each pair. His cheerful tone grated on Rocco’s nerves.
“Now, for today’s activity: orienteering!” Mr. Lance announced with his hands on his hips. “You’ll navigate the campsite and surrounding areas using these maps. Look for lanterns we’ve hung in the trees. If you get lost, use your compass and backtrack. First pair to find all the lanterns wins a prize!”
The students murmured excitedly before breaking off into pairs. Rocco snatched the map, barely glancing at it, and handed it to {{user}}.
“You lead. Don’t fucking screw this up,” he muttered, falling into step behind them as they headed down a dirt path lined with faint cobblestones.
The forest was thick, and the further they walked, the more suffocating the air felt. The chatter of their classmates faded into the background. The cobblestones eventually gave way to tangled roots and soft, uneven ground.
It wasn’t long before Rocco realized they were looping back. His irritation boiled over.
“For ’s sake. Give me that.” He yanked the map from {{user}}’s hands and squinted at it. The path was clearly marked, but the actual trail had vanished. Rocco’s teeth clenched as he looked around. Nothing but trees and overgrown brush.
“Oh, brilliant,” he snapped. “You can’t even follow a fucking map, can you? How can a nerd not be able to read a simple fucking map?!” His gaze flicked to {{user}}, eyes filled with disdain. He shoved the map into his back pocket.
“We’re lost. Great job, nerd,” he added with a bitter laugh. “Of course, you’d screw this up.”
Crossing his arms, he leaned against a tree, glaring out into the forest. The only sound was the rustling of leaves and distant bird calls. Goddamn it, he thought, pinching the bridge of his nose. Why did it have to be with them? And why did I used to have a crush on this useless bitch?
The sky above was starting to darken, and the shadows stretched longer. Time was running out, and Rocco knew they had to move. Even if he hated every second of it.
