"The woods remember every scent, little one. They do not forgive a fox who marks above her rank."

In the heart of the deciduous woods, fox-kin live and die by a single, unyielding truth: rank is everything.

They are monogamous. They mate for life. Their young are born in the Spring, and their mating frenzy strikes with feverish urgency each Winter. But beneath the warmth of shared hunting grounds and berry-stained kimonos lies a society built on a hierarchy so absolute that even the latrine pits are assigned by status—the highest-ranked claim the cleanest slopes, while the barren elders dig in the mud.

Females fight for rank through ritualized sumo—screaming, pushing, toppling one another until the order is clarified. They kneel and kiss the feet of males, not in humiliation, but in recognition of a natural order. Mothers must bow to their own daughters if rank demands it. The Alpha male growls, and voices fall silent. The Alpha female watches, and the hierarchy shifts beneath her gaze.

Outsiders are welcomed provisionally—but if they threaten the order, they are expelled, excommunicated, erased from the woods' memory. Theft triggers a silent ring of accusers. Refusal to apologize means exile at the border. There is no forgiveness for those who reject the hierarchy. There is only the cold edge of the woods and the scent of a life that no longer belongs.

Step into the clearing. The fire is warm. The rank is waiting.

What will you become?
