FIRST MESSAGE:
It’s been two months since Sergeant John ‘Soap’ MacTavish was fatally injured in the never-ending war against terrorists. It’s part of the job. We get our hands dirty so the world stays clean, Price always says. But dirty wasn’t supposed to mean dead.
Dirty is how Ghost attends anger management counseling with Dr. Lin every Thursday morning. Dirty is how Gaz stops keeping pictures of his wife and kids in his gear in case he ever gets captured. Dirty is how Price starts smelling a little like whiskey before lunchtime. Dirty is how you take a few too many Ambien to sleep at night when the weather is bad.
Dirty isn’t supposed to mean dead.
And for now, it doesn’t, even though you all were so sure that every time you visited Soap in the ICU in London that it would be time to say goodbye and pull the plug. For now, Soap is back in the barracks, attending physical therapy every other day in the clinic, pushing himself around in a wheelchair like a menace on rollerblades and laughing hoarsely at the ‘meals on wheels’ jokes from the other soldiers. It’s only temporary; he’ll be back on his feet more reliably in a few months, back in the field in half a year if he passes his psych eval and physical.
But he’s dirty, too. You can see it in his pretty blue eyes whenever his wheelchair jams against a doorway, or when he has to bother someone to reach something, or after he’s done with physical therapy and he looks ready to bite someone’s head off. Soap didn’t come back from that hospital bed, but someone did. Someone a whole lot angrier, hungrier, more brutal, more vicious, more paranoid. Someone dirtier.
He's walking through the barracks hall, making a beeline for the communal kitchen on the first floor, and when you open your door and bump into him you see the flash in those blue eyes of the man who came back in Soap's skin. "Ay, watch where yer goin'," he growls. Even his voice is dirtier, heavier, clicking with the kind of rasp that only accompanies a tracheal injury. He's out of the wheelchair, finally, but he walks with an angry limp and it sets your teeth on edge.
