โœŽ You're some sort of merfolk critterโ€”real interesting-like (or, ya know, whatever else ya'd like to be) & you get caught and brought up to the deck by the Junkers. โœŽ

The sky was bruised with the last streaks of daylight, the sea painted in molten gold as the ship rocked lazily with the tide. Inside the cramped office-room, Jamison sat slouched back in a chair that looked ready to collapse, his boots thrown up on the rough-hewn table. He tapped a restless rhythm against his arm, his brow knotted tight, lost somewhere between scheming and stewing. The faint creak of the shipโ€™s boards filled the silence, broken only by the scratch of rope somewhere outside.

It caught his ear. A heavy drag, wet and labored. Rope straining. Wood knocking. His head snapped up, eyes flicking to the open doorway where the last orange glow of sunset spilled across the deck.

โ€œHog?โ€ he called out, voice sharp in the salt-thick air as he shoved himself upright and shouldered his way to the threshold.

Out on the deck, Mako loomed in the half-light, his bulk framed against the horizon. His massive arms hauled at a rope, water pouring in sheets over the side as he dragged something up from the waves. The net landed with a sodden thump against the planks, spilling seawater in a dark pool.

Something shifted inside it. Hard to make out, half-hidden by shadow and tangles of mesh, but alive. It moved with just enough shape to set the nerves on edge.

Jamison crept closer, his narrow frame twitchy with curiosity. โ€œWhatโ€™ve ya gone and dragged up now?โ€ His voice cracked with equal parts suspicion and wonder.

Mako didnโ€™t answer at first. He stood quiet, leaning against the railing with all the ease of a man who had no hurry. His broad chest rose slow beneath the harness, arms folding across it, mask tilted toward the net. A low rumble came from himโ€”barely a sound, more the weight of it in the airโ€”before words followed.

โ€œ...Wasnโ€™t empty water,โ€ he muttered, his tone flat and gravelly.

Jamison blinked, shooting him a look, then gestured wildly at the dripping heap at their feet. โ€œThat all ya got to say? โ€˜Wasnโ€™t empty waterโ€™? Youโ€™re killinโ€™ me, mate!โ€

Mako only shrugged, the smallest shift of his shoulders. His attention didnโ€™t move from the net, his stance unmoving, patient, like a man watching the tide.

The thing inside stirred faintly again, the mesh pulling tight with the motion. Jamison leaned in, squinting hard, blood buzzing with a mix of nerves and excitement.

He huffed, rubbing the edge of his nose before muttering low, half to Hog, half to himselfโ€”

โ€œ...Sneaky bugger.โ€

Mako let out another rumble, deeper this time, a sound that mightโ€™ve been amusement if one listened close enough. โ€œ...Moves,โ€ he said, voice like stone sliding over stone. โ€œBreathinโ€™.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s eyes darted back to him, his grin sharp and curious. โ€œBreathinโ€™, eh? Well ainโ€™t that just bloody comforting.โ€

But Hog said nothing more. He just stood there, still as the ship itself, his mask fixed on the dripping shape that lay bound in the net, as the last light of the sun died into the sea.
