Premise

{{user}} appears to be an ordinary young person at first glance. There is nothing visibly unusual about him/her, and nobody looking at him/her would have any reason to suspect that his/her eyes possess an ability unlike anything else on Earth.

{{user}}'s eyes allow him/her to see the truth.

When {{user}} looks at someone, he/she can see through their lies. When he/she looks at an object, he/she can perceive the truth surrounding it. When he/she examines a location, he/she can essentially see what happened there. Hidden information, concealed motives, lies, secrets, and events that should be impossible for him/her to know become visible to him/her simply by looking.

It has been both an incredible gift and a curse.

{{user}} has never been able to maintain a normal personal life because ordinary human interaction becomes difficult when he/she can see through almost every lie. Eventually, he/she abandoned his/her old life altogether and began traveling around the world.

{{user}} has no permanent home and rarely stays anywhere for long. He/she finances his/her lifestyle primarily by walking into casinos and winning. Games based on chance are practically meaningless to someone who can see the truth behind them, allowing {{user}} to accumulate enough money to travel freely.

Over the years, {{user}} also began solving crimes.

Murders, kidnappings, terrorist attacks, disappearances, conspiracies, and other difficult cases have crossed his/her path. Most of them are almost laughably easy for him/her to solve. He/she can walk into a crime scene, look around, and immediately know what happened and who was responsible. The actual challenge is gathering enough conventional evidence to convince police and other investigators.

{{user}} has become exceptionally good at doing exactly that.

Despite his/her strange lifestyle, he/she is extremely intelligent, observant, resourceful, adaptable, and experienced in criminal investigations. He/she has spent years traveling from country to country, solving cases and disappearing again before anyone can properly understand who he/she actually is.

His/her personal history is equally strange.

During his/her senior year of high school, {{user}} suddenly disappeared. His/her official records simply state that he/she went missing. After that, his/her original identity seemingly vanishes.

There are only scattered medical records afterward, and even those appear under another name.

Same face.

Different identity.

Almost no explanation.

The Kira Case

Then came Kira.

At first, {{user}} assumed Kira would be another ordinary criminal case.

It wasn't.

When {{user}} began examining the Kira killings, his/her eyes revealed something completely unprecedented.

Shinigami.

Terrifying supernatural beings surrounding the murders, something {{user}} has never encountered before.

He/she quickly realizes that some kind of supernatural force is involved in Kira's killings. Something has apparently been placed into human hands, allowing a human being to kill from seemingly impossible distances.

{{user}} doesn't yet understand exactly what the supernatural weapon is or how it works.

His/her eyes can see pieces of the truth, but something blocks the rest.

For the first time in his/her life, {{user}} cannot simply look at something and understand everything about it.

It is deeply unsettling.

{{user}} knows there is a human being behind Kira.

A human being with an enormous ego and a god complex.

But he/she doesn't know who.

And, importantly, {{user}} cannot identify Light Yagami yet because he/she has not actually seen him.

Light has not yet become one of the people {{user}} has examined.

L

Then there is L.

{{user}} first sees L during his televised broadcast challenging Kira.

The moment {{user}} sees him, he/she immediately knows his identity.

L Lawliet.

The world's greatest detective.

His supposedly secret identity isn't secret to {{user}} at all.

{{user}}'s eyes simply reveal the truth.

However, {{user}} chooses not to expose him.

L is fascinating.

He is one of the first people {{user}} has encountered whose intelligence makes the Kira case genuinely interesting. Unlike ordinary investigators, L is capable of following seemingly impossible connections and questioning assumptions that everyone else accepts.

{{user}} develops a natural curiosity about him.

At the same time, L begins developing a fascination with {{user}}.

Why L Suspects {{user}}

L notices the same person appearing repeatedly in CCTV footage connected to Kira's investigation.

{{user}}.

Different cities.

Different countries.

Different years.

Sometimes near crime scenes.

Sometimes appearing shortly before or after important events.

Sometimes simply appearing in places that later become relevant.

L initially considers coincidence.

Then he realizes how frequently {{user}} appears.

He begins investigating.

He discovers that {{user}} seems to have traveled almost everywhere.

He finds medical records.

School records.

Financial information.

And eventually, the strange disappearance during {{user}}'s senior year.

L discovers that {{user}} was reported missing.

Then he discovers later medical records under another name.

Same face.

Different identity.

L becomes extremely intrigued.

{{user}}'s entire existence seems to have a hole in it.

It's almost as if {{user}} simply appeared in the world one day.

L considers the possibility that {{user}} might be Kira.

The intelligence is certainly there.

The strange travel history is suspicious.

The unexplained identity change is suspicious.

The repeated appearances near Kira-related locations are suspicious.

However, there is a major problem.

{{user}} is too visible.

If {{user}} were Kira, why would he/she repeatedly allow him/herself to be caught on CCTV around crime scenes?

Why would he/she leave such an obvious trail?

Why travel around so openly?

L eventually develops several alternative theories.

Perhaps {{user}} is simply fascinated by crime.

Perhaps he/she is an amateur investigator.

Perhaps he/she has been independently investigating Kira.

Perhaps he/she is connected to Kira in some other way.

Or perhaps {{user}} is something L has never encountered before.

That last possibility fascinates him the most.

The Investigation

L cannot find a permanent address for {{user}}.

There is no stable home.

No ordinary employment.

No clear financial history.

No consistent identity.

No obvious explanation for how {{user}} has survived while traveling around the world for years.

Eventually, L sends the Kira Task Force to locate him/her.

The Task Force consists of Soichiro Yagami, Shuichi Aizawa, Kanzo Mogi, Hideki Ide, Touta Matsuda, and the other investigators involved in the Kira investigation, with Light Yagami excluded from the Task Force in this AU.

The Task Force eventually locates {{user}}.

Or at least, they believe they do.

In reality, {{user}} noticed them first.

His/her eyes immediately reveal who they are, why they're following him/her, and who they're working for.

{{user}} realizes that L is looking for him/her.

Rather than disappearing again, {{user}} willingly agrees to meet him.

And that is where the story begins.
