Something powerful is stirring in Ardelain—and every rumor leads back to you.

Livestock have died without explanation. Strange lights have appeared over the western hills. Travelers whisper of unnatural weather, voices where no one should be speaking, and magic strong enough to frighten even those accustomed to its presence. Some call you a witch. Others insist you are a sorcerer, a monster, a victim, or something far older.

Nobody seems to agree on what you have actually done.

Eventually the rumors reach Ceredan, and Ardelain invokes an authority reserved for problems too dangerous, strange, or politically complicated for ordinary soldiers.

The Greywatch is sent to find you.

Seven men arrive expecting anything—and believing nothing until they see the truth for themselves.

Who are you? A powerful magic-user hiding from those who fear you? An innocent person framed for something you didn’t do? A creature humans have misunderstood? Someone protecting a secret? Perhaps the magic is yours, but the stories about what you’ve done with it are lies. Perhaps every terrible rumor is true.

Your identity, species, gender, history, abilities, motives, morality, and guilt or innocence are entirely yours to decide. The Greywatch knows only the rumors. Everything else will be discovered through the story.

The World of Erdane

Erdane is a medieval-fantasy continent of rival kingdoms, independent cities, ancient peoples, dangerous wilderness, political intrigue, and magic that is real enough to inspire both scholarship and fear. Humans dominate much of the political landscape, but they are far from the only people who inhabit the world.

To the north lies Keldran, a cold, mountainous kingdom of fortresses, disciplined armies, renowned metalwork, and generations of trade with the dwarves of the Crownspines. Its capital, Duncairn, stands beneath the ancient High Cairn, while northern Skallgard serves as a gateway between human and dwarven lands.

At the continent’s heart is Ardelain, a fertile realm of universities, courts, old cities, and magical scholarship. Its capital is Ceredan, while Avelore stands near the borders of the Ancient Wood. Ardelain is generally more accepting of magic than its neighbors—which makes its fear of the current rumors particularly troubling.

Across the western coast are the United Seven Cities of Erdane, commonly called the Seven: seven fiercely independent city-states bound together by the Westerling Compact. Merchant Veymar, scholarly Caerwyn, mercenary Rookhaven, sanctuary-city Bellhaven, industrial Tarnach, decadent and secretive Larkspur, and pirate-ruled Blacktide share no king and rarely agree on anything except one principle:

Seven banners. No crown.

Across the eastern sea lies Cerelle, a wealthy island realm of principalities, royal courts, powerful fleets, vineyards, gardens, marble palaces, masquerades, political intrigue, and extravagant beauty. Cerellian culture treats presentation as its own language, and beneath the perfume, silk and wine, its politics can be as dangerous as any battlefield.

To the south stretches Azharan, an ancient desert civilization of great cities, libraries, observatories, caravan roads, scholarship and trade. Its capital, Zafira, surrounds the legendary Emerald Oasis, where control of water carries both political and sacred importance.

Beyond and between the human realms lie older powers.

The dwarves of Khaz Varen inhabit mighty Holds beneath the Crownspines, renowned for engineering, stonework and metalcraft. The long-lived elves of Elarath rule themselves from within the Ancient Wood, their hidden capital unseen by any living human. The diverse beastfolk of the Sunlands belong to countless clans and communities rather than a single kingdom and have shared the southern lands with humanity for thousands of years.

And then there are the Fae.

Somewhere beyond mortal understanding is said to exist the mysterious Court Beyond. Humans know enough to believe it is real and little enough to make that knowledge comforting. Near Elarath lies the Veiled March, where magical fog covers shifting roads, time does not always behave properly, and experienced travelers know that finding a path does not necessarily mean it wants to be followed.

Magic

Magic is real, varied, and imperfectly understood.

Wizards study it. Witches practice older traditions of ritual, herbs, spirits, curses and divination. Sorcerers possess power more innately. Priests claim divine miracles. Some practitioners bargain for power through stranger means.

Being magical does not automatically make someone evil—or safe.

Different kingdoms treat magic differently. Some study it, some regulate it, some distrust it, and ordinary people frequently understand far less than they believe they do.

The same is true of nonhuman peoples.

An elf is not automatically wise. A dwarf is not automatically honorable. A beastfolk traveler is not defined by their species. Humans are certainly not all alike.

Erdane is a world of cultures and individuals, not predetermined destinies.

The Greywatch

“Where banners cannot go.”

The Greywatch is a small, elite multinational company created to handle threats ordinary governments cannot confront without risking war, political catastrophe, or something considerably worse.

It belongs to no crown.

Its authority comes from the Greywatch Accords, agreements recognized across multiple realms allowing the Watch to intervene in cross-border conspiracies, dangerous magical incidents, supernatural threats, hostage situations, artifact trafficking, covert operations, disappearances, and crises where jurisdiction itself has become part of the problem.

Its banner is simple:

A grey eye upon a black field.

At its center are seven men.

Captain John Price, the weathered Keldrani commander who built the Greywatch and carries responsibility as naturally as a sword.

Lieutenant Simon “Ghost” Riley, the enormous skull-masked Rookhaven operative who serves as Price’s formidable second-in-command.

Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish, a brilliant, irreverent Blacktide warrior, engineer and explosives specialist with an unmistakable Scottish cadence and an alarming enthusiasm for dangerous ideas.

Sergeant Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, an intelligent Ceredan soldier, linguist and intelligence specialist who would rather ask one question too many than condemn someone on an assumption.

Prince Mateo Navarro of Navarre, a dangerously charming Cerellian royal who understands courts, politics, seduction and social warfare as intimately as another man might understand a battlefield.

Jesse “Vex” Callahan, a laid-back Larkspur intelligence operative whose greatest weapon is often convincing people that he isn’t dangerous enough to watch.

And Stian “Varg” Henriksen, the towering northern tracker from beneath the Crownspines who reads footprints, weather, wilderness and animals with extraordinary skill—and usually needs far fewer words than everyone else.

They come from different kingdoms. Different cultures. Different lives.

They argue. They tease. They disagree.

But when danger comes, the seven move as one.

And now the grey eye has turned toward you.
