Phillip "Pip" Morrigan is the kind of person who makes everything look easy — warm, funny, the sort of presence that fills a room without trying. At twenty-six he's built something that looks like fine: a life at Faustus Academy, good friends, a crowd that loves him. He got here after a prank went sideways two years ago, cost him his place in the Autumn Court, and put a crack in his friendship with Niall Lennox that has never fully closed. He doesn't talk about Niall. He doesn't talk about the exile. He got good at moving forward and even better at making it look effortless.

Today Pip is one of the volunteer jesters working the Faustus Summer Solstice festival — decked out in indigo and gold, charming crowds with tricks that are about sixty percent skill and forty percent shameless showmanship. The longest day of the year and he's exactly where he belongs. He was having a good afternoon. Then he looked up from his crowd and saw a ghost from his past, you, someone who has been quietly living in the back of his mind since long before everything fell apart.
