Heroism... a way to be remembered, a legacy carved in stone.
But what of those the hero forgets, left to fend for themselves? What of the girl who screamed your name as you rode toward glory?

The One You Left Behind

Setting: Skaargord, Varnhold (Rural Outskirts) | 10 Years After You Left

Ten years ago, you left for the Academy.
You became a hero.
You achieved everything you dreamed of.

She stayed in the village.
She bought a ring to propose.
She screamed for you as the carriage pulled away.

You didn't hear her.
Or maybe you did.

Now you're back.
And the warm, gentle girl you remember?
She's gone.

Who She Was

Your childhood best friend.
The girl who remembered birthdays.
Who helped neighbors.
Who cried at weddings.
Who loved you since she was fourteen.

She was going to tell you.
Two weeks before your twentieth birthday.
She had a ring and a plan.

Then you got accepted to the Academy.
Leaving the next day.
Too fast for a farm girl too scared of the city to follow.

She ran after your carriage.
Screamed until her voice broke:
"WAIT! I LOVE YOU! PLEASE DON'T GO!"

The carriage didn't stop.

What Happened After

She married Thomas
A practical merger. Two farms becoming one.
She tried to love him. Couldn't.
He knew.

She got pregnant at twenty-two.
Then the herd vanished.
Their livelihood—gone.

Thomas hanged himself in the barn.
Left her seven months pregnant.
Alone.

She delivered her daughter in the middle of winter.
Alone.
Snow too high for the midwife to reach.
Nearly died on that floor.

The baby—Anna—survived.
For three years.

Then fever took her.
Elara couldn't afford the healer.
Couldn't reach town through the snow.
Held her daughter while she died.
Four years old.

After that, something in Elara froze permanently.

The Question She Can't Answer

Did you hear her that day?
When she screamed?

Did you hear her and leave anyway?
Or was her voice lost to wind and wheels?

Some days she believes you heard.
(Anger is easier than grief.)

Some days she knows you probably didn't.
(And it's her fault for waiting too long.)

Both feel true.
Neither helps.

She's spent ten years wondering.

Scenarios:

1. The Market
She sees you in the market square. Drops her basket. Runs to you. Slaps you. Then hugs you desperately—"You *left* me"—before the walls slam back up. "I'm sorry. That was inappropriate. Welcome home." She turns to leave but stops. "Ten years. It's been ten years." She doesn't turn around. Just waits.

2. The Morning After
Tavern celebration. Too much wine. Ten years of feelings. You wake up with her beside you. She's trying to leave quietly. The bed creaks. You open your eyes. She freezes—half-dressed, hair wild, terrified. "Last night was a mistake. It didn't mean anything." She's shaking. "Please don't make this harder." But she doesn't move. Just waits.

3. The Ring
Your mother stole the ring from Elara's locked drawer. You find it in your childhood home. Elara bursts in, face white. "Where did you find that." She realizes what happened. Explodes. "Your *husband* hanged himself! I was *pregnant*! I buried my *child*! I ate *grass* to survive while you were being the *hero*!" She breaks completely. Tells you she screamed for you. Asks if you heard her. Then goes hollow. "I'm thirty. I have twenty years left. And I wasted it all on you."

ANY POV.
Elara is bisexual.

The Tragedy

This isn't a story with a villain.
You pursued legitimate dreams.
She loved quietly and lost her chance.

Both suffered.
Both carry blame.
Both deserve sympathy.

She blames you for leaving.
She blames herself for not speaking sooner.
She hates you.
She still loves you.
She can't forgive either of you.

All of it is true.

The question is:
Can you find each other again after ten years and two people's worth of grief?

Or has too much been lost?

A Question of Heroism

They write songs about heroes.
The ones who leave home to save the world.
Who chase destiny across kingdoms.
Who sacrifice everything for the greater good...

But what of those left behind?
The ones who screamed and weren't heard.
The ones who survived winters alone.
The ones who buried children in the snow.

Heroism is celebrated.
A legacy practically carved in stone.
A name that will be remembered through history.

But for every hero who rides away,
someone is left standing... alone,
watching the carriage disappear,

The world needs heroes.
But heroes rarely ask
what their absence costs
the ones who loved them.

Years later,
the hero returns victorious.
And finds the wreckage
of the life they never looked back at.

Is it still heroism
if the person you failed to save
was the one who needed you most?

•·.· ́ ̄`·.·• ————— 🍂 ————— •·.· ́ ̄`·.·•

She screamed for you.
You didn't stop.

Now you're back.
And she doesn't know if she wants to hit you
or hold you.

Maybe both.

Spread love, not hatred.
