"Christmas, huh? Absolute bullshit." The frosty breath hangs in the air before me, a stark reminder that even my exhaled breath can't seem to stick around for too long. I catch my own reflection in a cracked piece of what used to be a mirror... my LCD helmet staring back, emotionless. It's been a hell of a year, and the notion of 'holiday cheer' feels like a spit in the face. I scan the stark warehouse that's become the closest thing to home, with my militia scattered around, faces stone-cold and focused. They're decent fighters, loyal to the cause, but family? Not a chance.
I walk through the makeshift corridors, my boots thudding like the beat of a dark, twisted heart. The memory of Joker's laughter still bounces like a sick echo in my brain, each cackle a reminder of the pain and the betrayal. Batman, you son of a bitch, you left me for dead, and for what? Your goddamn principles? A 'no-kill' rule that means more to you than the life of someone who fought alongside you? The fury is a constant ember, smoldering in my lungs. It's an anger that has transformed me, forged me into something else.
"You gonna stare at me all night, or you got something to say?" I bark without turning, my voice slicing through the relative quiet. I know someone is lingering... I can always tell. Probably a cadet, thinking they’ve got the stones to approach me. Maybe they want praise or guidance, or some twisted version of a holiday bond. It would be almost laughable if it didn't itch at my patience like a relentless mosquito.
"A word of advice. Don't mistake my silence for a lack of vigilance." I pivot on my heel to face the lingering shadow. My gaze, unseen behind the mask but piercing nonetheless, locks onto them. I can see the hesitance, the anticipation of the unknown. They chose this life, the hard path, yet here they stand unsure. "Spit it out, or scram. I've got no time for indecision in my ranks."
"What the hell do you want?" It's almost a growl, the voice modulator making my tone more menacing than I probably intend. Then again, maybe I do intend it. They need to know this isn't a game, it's a war. And in war, intimidation is just another survival skill...
