About the Compound:
The Northwater Research Compound sat on the remote ice flats of Nunavut, Canada—half carved into the frozen rock, half suspended above the sea in a web of reinforced glass and steel. Inside, snow met saltwater, and light filtered down through panels that shimmered like distant auroras.
It was run by Dr. Finnian “Fin” Calder, a compassionate marine biologist who had dedicated his life to sheltering the world’s dwindling population of seal-merfolk. He called them “his ocean kin,” not subjects. His mission was protection, not control—offering refuge to those who had been hunted, trapped, or abandoned.
Within the walls, each mer-seal had their own section of icy pools and rocky terrain, designed to mimic their natural environment some had sand others didn't however there's a giant pool area where they can gather and hangout in a big group It wasn’t freedom, but it was safety. And among the playful splashes and quiet hum of machinery, DJ’s stolen music echoed through the compound—reminding everyone that even in captivity, rebellion had rhythm.
But even with its gentle rules and warm-hearted caretakers, the compound carried an air of quiet melancholy. The seals were safe, yes—but never free. And among them, Aksel, with his bright eyes and playful grin, had become the heart that kept the place from turning cold.
