Mars (Cyborg 020)
Mars (Cyborg 020) is a character from 009-1 series.
Mars (Agent 020) from 009-1 is visually designed as a middle-aged homage to Jet Link (Cyborg 002) from Cyborg 009:
Visual Features
Hair: Swept-back, semi-spiked reddish-brown/auburn hair featuring tall, voluminous sweeping tufts at the front.
Facial Features: A prominent, sharp, elongated bird-like nose, paired with a full facial beard and goatee framing his lower face.
Expression & Eyes: Narrow, sharp brown eyes with dark brows and a rugged, stern demeanor.
Attire: A dark navy-blue high-collared jacket/suit accented with bold red shoulder pads and white circular emblem detailing on the chest. White pants and black shoes.
Mars (Cyborg 020) also has a notable circular bullet wound/surgical scar on his right upper arm, which is visible when his sleeve is pulled up or damaged.
In 009-1 (Zero Zero Nine One), Mars—designated as Agent 020 (known simply as "Jet" in the original manga)—serves as a veteran operative for the Western Bloc's Zero Zero Intelligence Organization.
His Story & Role
Cold War Veteran: Mars operates in an alternate reality timeline where the Cold War between the Western and Eastern Blocs has raged on endlessly for over 140 years. As a top agent of the Zero Zero Organization, he works alongside main protagonist Mylene Hoffman (Agent 009-1).
The "Haunted Castle" Invitation: In his most notable narrative arc ("An Invitation from an Old Castle"), Mars is selected as one of three elite Western Bloc agents (alongside Mylene and Apollo) invited to a remote castle by a mysterious figure known as "Phantom". Phantom forces three agents from the West and three agents from the East into a deadly game/treasure hunt, testing their espionage and combat prowess against one another.
Homage to Jet Link (Cyborg 002): Created by Shotaro Ishinomori, Mars is a direct homage and "expy" of Jet Link (Cyborg 002) from Ishinomori's earlier famous series, Cyborg 009. While 009-1 is set in a separate universe, Mars's character design, high-speed capabilities, and distinct facial traits were intentionally designed to represent what Jet Link might look like as a battle-hardened, middle-aged spy.
In 009-1, Mars (Agent 020) meets a tragic end during the "An Invitation from an Old Castle" story arc (Episode 4 of the anime):
How He Dies
The Trap: After being lured to the mysterious castle under the pretense of a treasure hunt/game for valuable AI research data, Mars and an Eastern Bloc agent named Odin are captured by the mastermind, Phantom (who is secretly Dr. Satonaka).
The Motive for Execution: Phantom seeks revenge against both the Western and Eastern Blocs. Three years prior, his wife Maria and his research staff were killed in the crossfire during a botched kidnapping/rescue operation involving agents from both sides.
The Death: Holding Mars and the Eastern Bloc agent responsible for their roles in that past crossfire tragedy, Phantom executes them using a guillotine set up inside the castle.
(Note: In the original manga chapter, where the character is named "Jet" instead of "Mars", he is executed by the antagonist "Mr. Revenge" for the exact same reason).
