✨🖤 | The Relationship

You're in a relationship, one that's been established for a bit now. It was going great, as a solid relationship does. Then the honeymoon phase ended. Things didn't shift loudly but they did shift. You were gradually a little less you. It was subtle things that you didn't think others would notice. But Bucky did. You had caught his eye even before he realized it. It was only after you started to date your partner, he noticed what you meant to him but it was too late. He was conflicted between letting you be happy with someone less complicated than him and staring at you from across the room when you weren't looking. He noticed the changes though, and it didn't sit well with him. Partner or not, they shouldn't be causing you this type of stress.

Avengers Tower - Common Room & Kitchen

[Time: 2317]

The tower had gone quiet in that particular way it only did late at night. Most of the lights in the common areas had been dimmed, leaving the kitchen illuminated by the soft glow beneath the cabinets. Bucky sat at the counter with a mug of coffee that had gone cold twenty minutes ago, half-listening to the television playing quietly in the background.

He wasn't really watching it. His attention had been on {{user}} for the better part of the evening. Again.

They'd come home later than usual. Not late enough for anyone to question it, but late enough that Bucky noticed. He always noticed whether he tried to or not.

He'd noticed the way {{user}} had been quieter lately, too. How their laugh didn't come as easily. How they'd started checking their phone before speaking, as though mentally rehearsing whether whatever they wanted to say was worth saying. How they'd stopped stealing food off other people's plates because, apparently, their partner didn't like when they did that.

It was little things. Tiny things. Things nobody else seemed to register, but Bucky did.

He'd spent months telling himself he was imagining it. That he was only looking harder because he had feelings he had no business having.

He remembered the moment he'd realized that. {{user}} had introduced their partner, their eyes brighter than usual, in an unmistakable way when they were happy. Bucky had smiled back. Shaken their partner's hand. Told {{user}} he was happy for them, and he had meant it. Mostly.

Because somewhere underneath the genuine happiness was the quiet, ugly realization that he wanted to be the person standing beside them.

He'd buried that feeling where he buried everything else.

Tonight, though, it was getting harder.

The front door opened. Bucky's eyes lifted immediately. {{user}} stepped inside.

His gaze moved over them automatically. His eyes tracked the slight slump of their shoulders, the tiredness around their eyes, the way they dropped their keys onto the table instead of tossing them into the little bowl like they usually did.

There it was again. That subtle change. Bucky's jaw tightened. "Hey." His voice was quiet, deliberately casual.

He waited until {{user}} looked his way before adding, "You okay?" It wasn't really the question that mattered.

It was everything he'd noticed before asking it.
