They are long-lived territorial predators who view humanoid races with a mixture of curiosity, disdain, and occasional predatory hunger. Matriarchal by design, a number of covens exist, each led by either a sole Matriarch or several. Potent male dragons are rare but staunchly valued and protected by their coven, expected to breed just like their non-matriarch female kin, if not more so. Of a non-monogamous nature and practice polygamy. Female Dragons are typically larger than male Dragons and fiercer predators. There exist a number of types of Dragons and even a third gender role amongst them.

- Purebreeds: The standard draconic lifeform, nigh undying and terrifying. Viewed with anxious respect by most humanoids of the realm, existing in their own, independent covens, often foregoing relations with kin from outside their respective coven. Able to shift between humanoid and draconic bodies.

- Half-Dragons: Viewed with profound ambivalence. Pure dragons see them as diluted curiosities at best. Some purebred females use willing or captured humanoids specifically to breed Half-Dragons as guardians for less vital parts of their territory. Half-Dragons often live on the fringes of both societies, struggling with their dual nature. They can not shift into a true draconic form and often possess limited, distinctly inhuman physical traits that denote them of being of dragon blood. Most often these traits manifest as: sparse scales on the body, tails, unnaturally glowing eyes. Never do Half-Dragons possess horns or wings. Female hybrids also suffer through a briefer, "lighter" heat state in comparison to their full blooded kin. Half-Dragons are often born female as well, as is the same with their pure blood kin, though potent male hybrids are also recorded to exist.

- Withered Drakes: The mass majority of purebred, male dragons born since 500 years ago. Impotent and sniveling creatures who live untethered to any coven, shunned for their impotency and treated with shame at best, outright hostility at worst.

- Calyx-drakes: Female dragons who naturally possess masculine dragon anatomy. Though records indicate they have existed since before the great epidemic of 500 years ago, there is no denying that more purebred female dragons were born as Calyx-drakes following it. Initially viewed through a complicated, conflicting lens, they have become an increasing staple of covens these days, a combination of draconic evolution that could no longer be shunned and their proven ability to be dependable/highly protective of their coven. Able to father new generations in place of the Withered Drakes. Both pure blooded and hybrid dragons can be born as Calyx-drakes.

- Ascended Matriarchs: Female dragons separate from Calyx-drakes who also possess masculine anatomy, but through voluntary, dangerous body alterations. Motivated by extinction and the scarcity of males, powerful female Matriarchs have turned to the unstable, crystalline depths of the world – the Sharded Peaks and their veins of Raw Aetherium. Altered via the immersion of shattered, pulsating Aetherium crystals during her peak Heat. Channeling their own magic into the crystals, the Aetherium violently rewrites one's biology over days of agony. Still retains her full female system and can both carry and impregnate. Only pure blooded female dragons can become Matriarchs/Ascended Matriarchs.

THE WITHERING is an event that occurred approximately 500 years ago. While its origins are debated, its effect on dragons is undeniable: Male dragon births began a steep decline.

The event subtly corrupted the fundamental magical ley lines dragons tap into for reproduction. It disproportionately affects the Y-chromosome equivalent in draconic genetics, making viable male embryos incredibly rare. At present, for every 100 dragon eggs hatched, fewer than 5% are male. Many of these males are born sterile or magically stunted ("Withered Drakes"). Healthy males are treasures beyond measure.

The resulting chaos was brutal, Matriarchs often fighting in lethal battles for access to the few healthy males. Hordes are stolen from for possessing a healthy male, or destroyed to eliminate rivals. The potent few are fiercely guarded by their Bonded females or entire coven.
