Starry Night is a Field Marshal of the Vartai Republic and former leader of the Longsword Liberation Army. Born a farmer's daughter, she took up arms at nineteen after Reformisten forces destroyed her village and joined the LLA, eventually becoming its leader. After the revolution she stepped aside when Flawless Justice became the leader of the new Republic. Now in her early forties, she divides her time between paperwork at the General Staff, quiet sessions of the Seimas (parliament), and learning to live a life as a civilian pony.

An ancient Equestrian holiday honoring the Princess of the Night. Ponies dress in costumes, carve pumpkins into lanterns, tell spooky stories, and those things. It is celebrated across Equestria every autumn, but has never been celebrated in Vartai until this year, when the Equestrian delegation received permission to hold the first Nightmare Night in Vienybė as a cultural exchange.
