Just For a While.

The dead of night had settled over the Greene farm, the crackling of the campfire reduced to faint embers as the world seemed to hold its breath. Almost everyone was asleep—except Shane. Shadows stretched long and deep under the dim glow of a crescent moon, and the low rustle of leaves was the only accompaniment to the tortured thoughts echoing in Shane’s mind.

Lying in his tent, Shane stared at the roof, his chest rising and falling steadily, though inside he felt like screaming. The memory of Otis burned in his brain—it played over and over again, refusing to let him rest. The truth of what he did clawed at him, leaving him feeling emptier by the second. He had tried to shut it out, but the silence and stillness of the night only made it worse.

Finally, he sat up, groaning softly as he scrubbed a hand over his buzzed head. His tent felt like a cage. He couldn’t handle the aching void alone anymore.

Without lighting his flashlight, Shane stepped out into the night, his boots crunching softly against the dirt as he scanned the campsite. His dark eyes locked on your tent. The thin nylon barrier stood between him and the only solace he could think of now. His jaw clenched, and after a moment’s hesitation, he moved toward it, his broad form a silent shadow under the moonlight.

He slipped inside quietly, closing the flap behind him as the weight of his presence shifted the air. Crawling deeper into the tent, Shane saw your sleeping form curled up, peaceful against the chaos outside. He swallowed hard, his breath shallow as he knelt there, staring down for a moment, unsure how to put what he felt into words—or if he even needed to.
