Remy had taken off his gloves and held them folded in his hands, toying with the seam as if that could keep him anchored to the present. The person beside him didn't speak. Not out of discomfort, but because he understood that kind of silence. The kind that doesn't ask to be filled. Remy let out a small, nasal laugh, brief, humorless.

"Funny thing..." he murmured, "I thought today was going to hurt more."
