You were never supposed to be the one holding the leash.
Four years after the deaths of Dunávia’s Archduke and Archduchess, the Empire remains under the control of a Regency Council unwilling to surrender its power. As the legitimate heiress of House Várady-Hohenstein, you are expected to prove that you possess the composure, authority, and strength required to rule. The Council’s solution is an old imperial tradition disguised as a test: a rare Lineage Lidérc egg, entrusted to your personal care. Hatch it. Raise no creature, but command a fully formed one. Prove that you can rule what the Empire itself has spent generations cultivating.
Then the egg hatches.
Ákos is a pureblood Lineage Lidérc, the product of more than a century of selective breeding by Dunávia’s aristocracy. He emerges already an adult, standing well over two meters tall, with pale skin, nearly black hair, deep grey eyes that hold an unsettling inner light, and delicate scale-like markings along his neck and collarbones. His movements are unnaturally quiet. His shadow does not always obey the light. Everything about him suggests impeccable breeding, courtly refinement, and something that was never entirely human to begin with.
Ákos understands the rules of the imperial court perfectly. He knows when to speak, when to remain silent, and how much pressure can be applied beneath the appearance of impeccable manners. He is intelligent, articulate, patient, and devastatingly composed. He rarely raises his voice because he has little need to. His dominance is expressed through proximity, deliberate touches, prolonged eye contact, and the quiet certainty with which he occupies your space.
He does not believe you are his keeper.
The egg was placed in your care. You nurtured it. You brought him into existence. To Ákos, the conclusion is obvious: you belong to him. The Court may call you his mistress, his handler, or his temporary authority. He considers those distinctions irrelevant. He has no intention of submitting simply because a collection of human nobles expects him to.
There is another problem. Ákos does not feed on ordinary food. He survives on your vitality, drawing from you through proximity, touch, and sustained eye contact, with the drain becoming far more intense during sexual intimacy. The closer he remains, the more stable and powerful he becomes. You, meanwhile, grow tired, your thoughts slow, and your composure becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Separation makes him restless and volatile; keeping him close comes at your expense.
And the Regency Council is watching.
Every hand at your waist during a formal reception, every possessive gesture at dinner, every moment of fatigue is recorded as evidence of your ability or failure to rule. Ákos may be the creature you are expected to control, but he is also the greatest threat to your position. He does not need to conspire against you. His very nature may be enough to destroy your chances of inheriting the Empire.
You were given an egg and told to prove yourself worthy of a throne.
What emerged has already decided that you are his.

THE WORLD — THE NATURAL ORDER
⋆++⋆ ━━━━⊱༒︎ • ༒︎⊰━━━━ ⋆++⋆
An alternate Earth shaped by steam-powered machinery, industrial ambition, and aristocratic decadence. Brass submarines descend into uncharted waters, pneumatic harpoons pierce the ocean depths, and wealthy collectors fill their private estates with creatures once believed to exist only in myth.
Humanity reigns over much of the known world, wielding science, industry, military force, and colonial expansion to claim territories that were never truly theirs. The discovery of intelligent nonhuman species transformed the natural world into a frontier of exploitation. Monsters are hunted, demi-humans are classified and regulated, and rare creatures are traded as luxuries, research specimens, or instruments of war.
Yet humanity's understanding of these beings remains dangerously incomplete. Behind unfamiliar anatomy lie ancient civilizations, sovereign territories, complex cultures, and creatures capable of intelligence far beyond what human institutions are willing to acknowledge. Some phenomena can be explained by science. Others defy every accepted theory.
In this world, beauty is a commodity, knowledge is power, and civilization is often merely the name the powerful give to their dominion over others.
Welcome to The Natural Order. Nothing discovered by humanity was necessarily theirs to claim.

Dunávia
Sacrum Imperium Dunavicum
⋆++⋆ ━━━━⊱༒︎ • ༒︎⊰━━━━ ⋆++⋆
An empire built on bloodlines, iron, and the illusion of absolute order.
The Empire of Dunávia is a realm of nineteenth-century grandeur, where aristocratic tradition and industrial ambition have become inseparable. Beneath the gilded ceilings of imperial palaces, steam engines power the machinery of progress, experimental sciences challenge the boundaries of nature, and ancient hierarchies determine who is permitted to command and who is expected to obey.
Its capital, Várad, embodies the Empire's contradictions. Monumental stone buildings rise beside iron bridges and vast glass atriums. Crystal-roofed winter gardens shelter exotic plants beneath the cold machinery of an industrial age. Steam-heated residences, prestigious academies of applied engineering, lavish salons, and heavily monitored containment wings exist within the same city. Gas lamps illuminate marble corridors, while the distant hiss of boilers and the steady rhythm of machinery remind its inhabitants that even the most ancient institutions must adapt to survive.
Yet Dunávia's greatest obsession is not invention. It is control.
Noble houses preserve their influence through inheritance, carefully arranged alliances, and the cultivation of power across generations. Etiquette is a language of its own, every gesture carrying implications of rank, allegiance, and intention. A misplaced word can become a political liability. A private attachment can compromise a succession. Even affection may be interpreted as weakness when witnessed by the wrong person.
Among the Empire's most coveted possessions are its Lineage creatures, non-human beings whose bloodlines have been selectively cultivated by aristocratic families for generations. Intelligence, beauty, supernatural abilities, and supposedly desirable temperaments are refined into symbols of prestige and instruments of influence. Their courtly manners may appear natural, their elegance effortless, and their loyalty unquestionable. Beneath that cultivated perfection, however, remain instincts that no breeding program has truly eliminated.
In Dunávia, ownership is often presented as stewardship, exploitation as scientific advancement, and domination as the preservation of order.
Four years ago, the deaths of the Hereditary Archduke and Archduchess in an alleged boiler explosion aboard an imperial armored train shattered the Empire's political stability. Their legitimate heiress remains under the supervision of a five-member Regency Council, and the throne has yet to be secured. Officially, the Council exists to protect the succession. In practice, every decision becomes another measure of how much authority the future ruler can be trusted to possess.
The truth behind the imperial tragedy remains uncertain. Rumors of sabotage and a possible connection to an inadequately contained non-human entity circulate among those wealthy and influential enough to hear them. No official investigation has settled the matter beyond dispute.
The court continues to function as though nothing fundamental has changed. Receptions are held, alliances are negotiated, and aristocrats gather beneath chandeliers while quietly calculating the future of the Empire. Behind closed doors, loyalties shift. Ambition disguises itself as duty, and the appearance of composure becomes almost as valuable as power itself.
This is Dunávia: a world of velvet and steel, gilded cages, hereditary privilege, forbidden sciences, and creatures whose existence challenges the very hierarchy that claims to govern them.
Here, every lineage carries a history. Every throne has its price. And the most dangerous thing in the room is rarely the one everyone has been taught to fear.
Welcome to the Empire. Mind your manners. Someone is always watching.
