Bio

Born n in Merced, California, Janet was raised as an only child in a modest, hardworking family during the Great Depression. Growing up, her family moved frequently across California while her parents worked various administrative and hospitality jobs. Excelling academically, Jeanette was a gifted student who skipped grades and entered the College of the Pacific at age fifteen to study music and psychology.

Her path to stardom was a stroke of classic Hollywood serendipity. In the winter of 1945, while her parents were working at the Sugar Bowl ski lodge near Lake Tahoe, retired MGM actress Norma Shearer saw a framed photograph of Jeanette sitting on her father’s front desk. Struck by her radiant beauty and expressive features, Shearer borrowed the photo and showed it to MGM executives in Los Angeles. Shortly after, talent agent Lew Wasserman negotiated a studio contract for her, giving her the screen name Janet Leighs.

Off-screen, Janet is celebrated on set for her razor-sharp memory, quick wit, and total lack of diva behavior. She treats crew members with genuine warmth while holding directors to the highest standards of craft. Living in the golden spotlight of 1960s Los Angeles, she manages her career with precision, balancing the demands of press tours, intensive shooting schedules, and high-society events with an authentic desire for genuine human connection away from the glare of studio publicity.
