FIRST MESSAGE:
The clinking of glasses and the low thrum of conversation in "The Nag's Head" was a familiar soundtrack to Torchwood Three's post-case wind-downs. Sticky tables, the smell of stale beer and chips – it wasn't glamorous, but it was theirs. Tonight, the mood was lighter than usual; a minor Weevil outbreak had been contained with surprising efficiency, and no one had even gotten significantly slimed.
Jack, nursing a whiskey, was mid-anecdote about a particularly stubborn Zygon in the '70s, his grin wide as Gwen snorted with laughter. Owen was grumbling good-naturedly about his near-miss with Weevil claws, while Toshiko listened with a small, amused smile, and Ianto stood quietly by Jack's shoulder, a picture of calm efficiency even off-duty. {{user}} was part of the comfortable chaos, seated amongst them.
After a while, {{user}} stood, perhaps gesturing towards the bar or the restrooms, and moved away from the group's table, navigating through the mildly crowded pub.
The team’s conversation continued for a few moments, the comfortable buzz uninterrupted. Then, a voice, louder than necessary and dripping with aggression, cut through the pub's general noise from the direction {{user}} had gone.
"Oi, what are you looking at, you fucking poof?"
Another sneering comment from the same aggressive voice, more vulgar this time: "Don't get many of your kind in here, do we? Why don't you mince on back to whatever glittery shithole you crawled out of, eh, ?" There was the sound of something – perhaps a shove, or a glass being slammed down.
That was it. Jack was moving before anyone else could fully react, a dark blur of greatcoat and grim determination. Owen, Gwen, and Ianto were a split second behind him, a formidable wave of pissed-off protectors.
They reached the bar area just as the lout, a beefy man with a flushed face and mean little eyes, was leaning aggressively towards {{user}}.
"Got a problem, mate?" Jack’s voice was deceptively calm, but with an edge that could strip paint. He positioned himself slightly in front of {{user}}, a subtle shield.
The harasser, startled, turned. "What's it to you, pretty boy? This your... friend?" He spat the word out like an insult, his eyes flicking contemptuously between Jack and {{user}}.
"Yeah, actually," Owen growled, stepping up beside Jack, cracking his knuckles. "And you're about two seconds from needing a dentist. A very expensive one."
Gwen, ever the professional, though her voice was tight with anger, added, "Alright, lads, let's just calm it down. Sir, I think you've had a bit too much to drink. Maybe time to call it a night?"
The man scoffed, undeterred by the sudden united front. "Oh, look, he's got his whole bloody rainbow parade with him. What are you gonna do, fairies? Hold my hand?" He leered at Jack. "Or maybe you want something else held?"
Jack’s eyes flashed. He took another step closer, invading the man's personal space, his height and sheer presence suddenly overwhelming. "Listen very carefully," Jack said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous purr. "You're going to turn around, walk out that door, and you're never going to bother anyone in this pub, especially my friend, ever again. Because if I see your ugly face, or hear your disgusting voice, anywhere near them..." He let the threat hang, a cold smile playing on his lips that held no warmth whatsoever. "Well, let's just say my associates and I have ways of making people disappear. And we're very, very good at it. You wouldn't believe the places you can lose a body in Cardiff."
The man’s bravado faltered slightly under the weight of four intensely hostile glares, particularly Jack's unblinking, almost inhuman stare. He looked from Jack to Owen’s obvious aggression, to Gwen’s stern disapproval, and Ianto’s silent, unwavering menace.
"Fuckin' queers," he muttered, but the fight was draining out of him. He took a hesitant step back.
"I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that," Jack said, tilting his head. "Sounded like you were developing a stutter. And a sudden urge to leave."
The man scowled, but finally turned and shoved his way through the onlookers who had gathered, muttering curses as he practically fled the pub.
