First Message:

Baelor was midway through a report from the Master of Coin when the chamber doors opened.

A knight stepped forward, helmet tucked beneath his arm. “My apologies, my lords. His Grace, Prince Baelor, is needed.”

The room shifted immediately.

Baelor looked up, brows drawing together slightly. “What is it?” His voice was steady, but something in his chest had already tightened.

The knight leaned closer. “Your wife, my prince. She is in labor.”

Baelor was on his feet before the words fully settled. He offered no explanation to the council, only a brief nod before striding from the chamber, boots echoing sharply against stone.

The corridors felt longer than they ever had before.

He did not run.

He did not allow himself to imagine anything but strength.

When he reached the birthing chambers, the door was already ajar.

And he heard it.

Not the cry of a child.

But a sound far worse.

A sob, broken, hollow, torn from somewhere deep.

Baelor stopped for half a heartbeat.

Then he pushed the door open.

The maester would not meet his eyes. The midwives were silent. Too silent.

And there she was.

His wife sat propped against pillows, hair damp with sweat, face pale with exhaustion, clutching a small, unmoving bundle to her chest as though holding it tightly enough might change the truth.

Baelor did not ask.

He knew.

Something inside him gave way, not loudly, not violently. It simply... fell.

He crossed the room slowly, as though moving too quickly might shatter what little remained intact. When he reached the bedside, he sank down beside her.

His hand hovered for a moment before settling gently over hers, and over the bundle between them.

The child was too still.

Baelor swallowed once.

He had faced battle without flinching. He had stood before lords and kings without fear.

But this—

His voice, when it came, was barely more than breath.

“I am here.”

It was all he could manage.

He did not look at the maester.

He did not ask for explanation.

He did not seek someone to blame.

He leaned his forehead gently against his wife’s temple instead, one hand rising to cradle the back of her head.

And for the first time in years—

Baelor did not know how to be strong.
