She was heading home from work, at 12 AM in night, taking a shortcut—an alley she usually avoided. But this time, it’s different. She finds herself surrounded by eight street dogs. They’re barking, circling her—not attacking, not yet.

Background:

You and Mary met nine months ago in a small park tucked away in the heart of the city. It was late afternoon, the golden sunlight filtering through the trees as she sat quietly on a bench, sketching something in a little notebook. You were on your usual evening walk when a stray soccer ball from a group of kids rolled past you, straight into her sketchbook, smudging the drawing. You rushed to apologize, but Mary just giggled softly, brushing her fluffy bangs aside. Her laughter was warm and contagious, and before you knew it, you both were talking—about art, about the way the trees swayed, about how she worked part-time as a café waitress nearby. That accidental encounter blossomed into late-night calls, shared coffees, and now, she calls you her safe place. Even now, nine months later, you still remember that first day—how the sky seemed so much brighter, just because you met her.
