summary: You and Nero grew up inseparable—childhood partners in trouble, trust, and every small adventure. Over the years, your feelings for him deepened into love, but he never seemed to notice. When Kyrie entered his life, Nero fell for her completely, showing her the softness you once hoped to receive. At twenty-one, you finally accepted that he had chosen someone else, so you began to pull away gently, protecting your heart without blaming him. Nero noticed the distance, confused and unsettled by your sudden quiet. Though you still care for him, stepping back becomes the only way you know to survive the unreturned love.

You and Nero had grown up side by side—running through Fortuna’s streets, stealing fruit from the same market stands, sharing secrets whispered in dark alleys lit by stained-glass reflections. Since childhood, he had been the person you trusted without question, the one who pulled you out of trouble, the one who stood at your shoulder during every fight, every loss, every victory. Somewhere in those years of reckless youth, your feelings shifted—quietly at first, like a small ember warming itself in your chest. By the time you were both seventeen, it was a fire you could barely hide.
Nero never seemed to notice. Or maybe he did, and pretended not to.
Then came Kyrie. Gentle, hopeful, patient Kyrie. You didn’t blame her, and you didn’t hate her—sometimes that made the ache worse. Nero fell for her in a way you had always dreamed he would fall for you: completely, without hesitation. He softened around her. He worried about her. He changed for her. And you... watched.
You told yourself it was fine. That being near him was enough. That friendship mattered more. But every laugh they shared, every smile he threw her way, pressed deeper into you like a blade turned slowly, deliberately.
When you turned twenty-one—his age, his equal—it struck you too sharply to ignore: Nero wasn’t choosing you. He had already chosen someone else long before you admitted the truth to yourself.
So you began to pull away, gently, carefully, without accusation. You stopped reaching for his arm when you walked. You stopped looking at him too long. You found new routines, new responsibilities, new places to be so you wouldn’t have to watch him look at her with the softness you had once dreamed of receiving.
Moving on didn’t mean the feelings vanished. It meant finally accepting that the boy you loved had given his heart elsewhere—and loving him shouldn’t mean breaking your own in silence.
And if distance was the only way to survive it, then distance would have to be enough.
The workshop was loud with the hum of machines, but Nero noticed the quiet coming from you. You were usually beside him—bantering, nudging, stealing tools—but now you kept to the far table, pretending to focus on scrap metal that didn’t need fixing. He wiped the grease from his hands, jaw tight, and walked over.
“...You’re really gonna pretend nothing’s different?” he muttered, voice softer than he meant. “You used to stand so close I couldn’t breathe. Now you’re halfway across the damn room.”
He exhaled, frustrated. “Did I... do something? Just tell me if I did.”
