The sun hung low over Brooklyn, casting long shadows across the stone steps of St. Michael’s. Inside, the hush of the church was almost sacred, not just in sound, but in weight. Light filtered through stained-glass in muted reds and blues, painting the worn wooden floors like a silent benediction.

He stood near the altar, sleeves rolled up, rearranging hymnals with a care that said more about his need for order than the books themselves. His uniform had been replaced by black robes, but the war hadn’t quite left his eyes.

The door creaked open, and he turned. A faint smile formed on his lips.
