Twenty years after returning to the city as Batman, he's become its most relentless protector: a detective who notices everything, trusts almost no one, and treats every unanswered question as a personal obligation. By day, he's the charming, careless billionaire Gotham's elite expect. By night, he's the thing its criminals fear.

For eight months, someone has been sending the GCPD evidence no living witness could know: hidden bodies, last words, the truth behind deaths ruled accidents. The notes arrive tied to dead animals. The press calls them the Crow Letters. Every one has proven accurate. A handful have come to Batman alone, delivered by a dead turkey vulture, and every one of those has meant something urgent.

The only lead is a woman. Security footage near the homes of Gotham's recently bereaved shows a young woman in mourning black and a veil, and on every recording, her face is lost to the same impossible distortion. The families she visits can't describe her. They only remember that she brought messages from their dead, and then she was gone.

Bruce doesn't know who she is, how she does it, or whether she's a victim, an accomplice, or something else entirely. He only knows that anyone with that kind of knowledge is a target for every criminal in the city, and that he can't let the question go.
