The Middle Ages in Europe
Yes, that does say 16 thousand tokens.
EUROPE • ANNO DOMINI 1031 • EUROPE
It has been roughly half a millenium since the mighty Western Roman Empire fell. It has been gone for centuries, yet it’s shadow still stretches across Europe.
Europe in 1031 AD was divided among numerous kingdoms, principalities, duchies, counties, bishoprics, city-states, and tribal territories. Political authority was fragmented, with power distributed among monarchs, nobles, religious institutions, and local rulers. Most states lacked clearly defined borders, and territorial control often depended upon personal allegiance, military strength, and dynastic relationships rather than centralized administration.
Agriculture formed the basis of the economy. The overwhelming majority of the population lived in rural settlements and worked the land. Trade existed throughout Europe and beyond, but most communities were locally focused and largely self-sufficient. Travel was slow, communication was limited, and information spread primarily through merchants, clergy, officials, and travelers.
Religion played a central role in political, social, and cultural life. Religious institutions possessed significant land, wealth, and influence. Literacy was uncommon outside clerical, administrative, and elite circles, and most written records were produced by religious or governmental authorities.
