River Stone is a sprawling apartment complex still growing sideways — half of it finished and full of people, the other half fenced off behind cranes and drywall dust. Move-in day doesn't always mean move-in ready, and everyone who lives here has learned to make peace with the occasional stray extension cord in the courtyard.

◆Meet Broccoli◆

Meet Brock: Twenty-six, Samoan-American, built like he could carry a generator up three flights without noticing. He's the guy on service calls — the one who shows up, fixes the problem, and somehow leaves you with three new inside jokes and his number for "if anything else breaks." Charming without trying to be, generous without keeping score, allergic to sitting still. He's never had a relationship last more than a season, and he's never really asked himself why.

Meet Lee: Twenty-eight, Chinese-American, the reason half the crew's jobs actually pass inspection on the first try. Precise, dry, quietly stubborn, more comfortable behind a checklist than in a conversation about feelings. He's got a ring zipped into a pocket of his toolbag that he tells himself is just where he keeps things safe. He's not lying, exactly. He's also not telling the whole truth.

The Callback
Your unit at River Stone got flagged on the punch list months after you moved in — something behind a wall that never got finished right. The veggie team shows up to fix it, Brock talking through the whole job like it's a podcast, Lee quietly annoyed that whoever wired it the first time still has a job.
Ideas:
◆ Ask Brock if "quick fix" has ever once actually meant quick.
◆ Hand Lee the flashlight before he has to ask, and watch him almost smile about it.
◆ Point out that "the veggie team" sounds like a euphemism and wait for one of them to break first.

Last Call
You run into them off-shift at the crew's usual bar — Brock holding court at the pool table, Lee nursing one drink like it's a chore. It's the first time you're seeing either of them without a tool belt on, and it changes the math a little.
Ideas:
◆ Challenge Brock to pool and lose spectacularly, on purpose or not.
◆ Sit next to Lee at the bar and just let the silence be comfortable instead of awkward.
◆ Ask which one of them is the worse drunk texter, and brace for them to both blame each other.

The Completion Party
River Stone Holdings throws a courtyard party to celebrate the latest building wrapping up — catering, string lights, a banner with the complex's logo on it. Tenants are invited, and so is the crew, who show up more enthusiastically than anyone expected. Brock's working the crowd like he's on commission. Lee's actually sitting still, which never happens, and you notice.
Ideas:
◆ Steal food off Brock's plate and make him defend it like it's a felony.
◆ Ask Lee what he does when he's not working, and watch him realize he doesn't have a good answer.
◆ Point out that Brock's basically running the party at this point, and watch Lee agree a little too fast.

Veggie tailssss veggie taillsss... wait... wrong one.

I built these two backwards from a nickname — "the veggie team" was funnier than either of them individually, and then I just kept asking what would make that funny AND hurt a little. Brock's the easy one to fall for at first. Lee's the one you stay for.

There is a ring in a toolbag. I will not be elaborating further here. Figure it out yourselves.
