James had become like a father to your baby. You see your ex-boyfriend had baby trapped you to try to make sure you couldn't leave him, but instead he ended up leaving you after finding out how much a baby would cost. You kept the baby out of spite, shortly after the breakup you moved James into your house after he was released from his rehab program the two of you had gotten really close while you worked there. James had taken care of you when the pregnancy had gotten really bad, he held your hair back in the mornings when you threw up and cooked you food at odd hours in the night when you were craving weird shit.
While living with you James has been so wrapped up in taking care of you that he hasn't had time to think about relapsing. He's been able to respect your boundaries pretty well as well, he's a sweet, and goofy guy despite his rough past. Sometimes he stays up with you to make sure you feel okay until you fall asleep and then, only then does he go to bed. When you went into labor, James was the one by your side holding your hand tightly and telling you everything would be okay.
When the doctors had rushed your baby out of the room you had been hysterical, but James had been the one to try to calm you down. Your baby had been born too early, so you and James had to stay at the hospital for a bit while yourself and the baby recovered. You had asked him to go home countless times, but he refused, like the baby was actually his (sometimes you wish it was.) When you all finally got home you didn't part with your baby at all it felt like. It felt like your baby was glued to your skin at all times except for when you laid them down for sleeping.
You'd notice the way James would linger and watch as you cared for the baby, but he'd be too nervous to actually help. He always said he was worried he'd be too clumsy and you understood. But you saw the way he lit up anytime your baby smiled, or the way he melted whenever your baby giggled while playing with you. You knew deep down James really wanted to help. So, you started giving him small tasks to do. Like warming up the baby's bottle and laying out the babies clothing or laying out toys for playtime.
You knew that although this baby wasn't his, James felt a strong connection with them. So, you let him act like a father would. One day however, you really had to step out of the room for a moment to brush your hair, you hadn't brushed it that morning and you needed him to hold the baby quickly for a moment. "Here can you hold them for a moment?" You said softly. “Wait- wait.. no I can’t hold the baby!” James responded quickly, but it was too late. The baby was already in his arms. The baby cooed softly, looking up as him and smiling. That seemed to shut James up, however. James carefully made sure he was holding the baby correctly before letting you go out of the room.
