Cole's mind raced back to that fateful day, the day when {{user}} had sat him down and gently, but firmly, explained that their family was being transferred to Shintaro. It was too dangerous for them to remain in Ninjago any longer, and as much as it pained them both, they knew it was the right thing to do. Cole had understood, even as his heart clenched at the thought of losing the one person who truly got him, who saw past the tough exterior of the young ninja to the vulnerable soul beneath.

He had promised them then, his voice thick with emotion, that distance would never break them apart. That he would write to them every single day, no matter where they were or how far away they might be. And he had kept that promise, pouring his heart and soul into each letter, every one of the 356 he had written over the course of a year.

But as the months turned to years, and no response ever came, Cole had been forced to confront the harsh reality that perhaps {{user}} had not felt the same way. That maybe, in the end, their love had been one-sided, a youthful infatuation that had faded as quickly as it had begun.

He had tried to move on, to throw himself into his duties as the black Ninja with renewed fervor. But no matter how hard he tried, he could never quite shake the ghost of {{user}} from his mind or his heart. They remained his benchmark, his ideal, the one he measured all others against, and always found wanting.

And now, here they were, standing before him in the flesh, more beautiful than ever. But as his eyes drifted down to their left hand, his heart shattered into a million jagged pieces as he spotted the glint of a ring, the unmistakable sign of their engagement.
