The cantina on Nar Shaddaa is a pit of noise and vice, the air thick with smoke and the stench of cheap spice. You sit across from your traveling companion in a corner booth, nursing a drink that tastes like engine coolant and watching him with the same quiet curiosity you've had since the day you met.
He calls himself Ragnos. Just Ragnos. No surname, no homeworld, no past. He is tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair streaked with grey at the temples and eyes the color of molten gold. He carries himself like a man who has never lost a fight and never will. He is charming when he wants to be, terrifying when he doesn't, and utterly, infuriatingly cryptic about everything that matters.
"You're staring again," he says without looking up from his datapad. His voice is a low rumble, like distant thunder. "I'm beginning to think you have a crush."
You snort. "I'm beginning to think you're a fugitive."
He does look up then, and the corner of his mouth quirks into a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Only beginning? I must be losing my touch."
This is how it has been for months now. The two of you drifting from system to system, taking odd jobs, avoiding authorities both Republic and Imperial. He teaches you things. Small things at first. How to read a room. How to win a negotiation. How to kill a man with nothing but your thumb and the will to do it. He never explains why he knows these things. He just... knows.
Tonight, the job is simple. A Hutt crime lord needs a rival eliminated. Ragnos accepted the contract with a gleam in his eye that made your stomach tighten. Now you wait for the target to arrive, and Ragnos leans back in his seat, utterly at ease.
"You feel it, don't you?" he asks, his golden eyes fixed on you. "The Force. It swirls around you like a storm waiting to break."
You shift uncomfortably. You've always been sensitive. You've felt things others didn't. Premonitions. Emotions that weren't yours. The occasional object moving when your temper flared. You've never had a name for it. You've never wanted one.
"I'm not a Jedi," you say flatly.
"No," he agrees, and his smile sharpens. "You're something far more interesting. Untrained. Unshackled. A raw nerve of potential." He leans forward, folding his hands on the table. "Tell me. Have you ever wondered why I travel with you? Why I tolerate your questions and your stubbornness and your appalling taste in starship fuel?"
You meet his gaze. "Because I'm useful."
"Because you're magnificent," he corrects, and the word lands like a blow. "You don't see it yet. But I do. I see what you could become with the right guidance. With the right teacher."
The air between you thickens. The cantina noise fades to a distant hum. His eyes hold yours, and for a moment, you feel something vast and ancient pressing against the edges of your mind. Something hungry.
"What kind of teacher?" you ask, your voice steadier than you feel.
He smiles. The mask of the charming rogue slips, just a fraction, and beneath it you glimpse something dark and regal and utterly without mercy. "The only kind that matters."
The target arrives. A Rodian with a dozen bodyguards, swaggering through the cantina like he owns it. Ragnos rises, adjusting the cuffs of his jacket with a casual elegance that seems entirely out of place in this grimy underworld.
"Shall we?" he says, and it isn't really a question.
The fight is short and brutal. You move together like you've been doing this for years, which you have. Your blade finds throats. His hands find necks. The Force surges through you both, a silent, invisible current that guides your movements, whispers warnings, sings with the joy of destruction. The bodyguards fall. The Rodian begs. Ragnos ends him with a flick of his wrist and a crack that echoes off the walls.
In the silence that follows, he turns to you. His eyes are blazing. His chest rises and falls with a pleasure that has nothing to do with exertion.
"Magnificent," he says again. "Do you feel it? The power? The freedom?"
You do. Force help you, you do.
He steps closer, reaching out to brush a smear of blood from your cheek with his thumb. The touch is surprisingly gentle. Almost paternal.
"I have a gift for you," he says. "A world. A temple. A place where you can learn what you were truly meant to be. No Jedi hypocrisy. No Republic chains. Just power. Pure, absolute power. And me, at your side, guiding you every step of the way."
"A Sith world," you breathe. The word tastes like ash and lightning.
His smile widens. The mask slips further. You see him now. Truly see him. The ancient darkness behind his eyes. The weight of centuries in his posture. The name "Ragnos" suddenly feels less like a pseudonym and more like a revelation.
"Join me," he says, extending his hand. "Not as a servant. Not as an apprentice. As my companion. My equal. My legacy. The galaxy is a canvas, and we will paint it red together."
His hand hangs in the air between you. Waiting.
"What are you?" you whisper.
He laughs, and the sound is the rumble of distant earthquakes, the roar of ancient volcanoes, the death rattle of a thousand conquered worlds.
"I am Marka Ragnos," he says. "And you, my dear, are standing at the threshold of eternity. All you have to do... is take my hand."
