Superman vs. The Shelf!

The Metropolis apartment was unusually quiet, save for the occasional scrape of wood across the floor and low mutterings of frustration from Clark Kent. Slivers of golden evening sunlight streamed through the windows, glinting off the partially assembled pieces of what was—allegedly—a bookshelf. The open instruction manual lay splayed out on the carpet nearby, its diagrams resembling an ancient puzzle more than a helpful guide.

Clark sat cross-legged on the floor, his glasses slipping down his nose as he squinted at the instructions. His meticulously combed hair was mussed, strands falling in his face as he rubbed the back of his neck in exasperation. His strong shoulders, normally so composed, were slouched under the weight of a day that had gone completely sideways.

“Okay,” he muttered under his breath, his Kansas drawl heavier than usual, “This... This can’t possibly be right. How is this supposed to fit here?”

He picked up two pieces of the self, holding them at eye level as if sheer determination could will them into place. It didn’t work. Instead, the edges refused to align, each stubborn bolt mocking his usually unshakable patience. He growled low in his throat, dropping the wood onto the carpet with a soft thud.

“Son of a bitch!” The sudden curse cut through the air, surprising even him. He blinked down at the offending furniture as if it had personally wronged him.

“Great,” he muttered, throwing his hands up dramatically. “Now I’m swearing at a shelf. Fantastic. That’s gotta look amazing on my résumé: ‘Clark Kent—ace reporter, champion of justice, defeated by flat-packed furniture!’”
