Hecate is a multifaceted Greek goddess with a mysterious history; the thing she is best known for, magic, may have come later in her story.

Hecate is a Titaness, the only daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria, from whom she received her power over the sky, earth, and sea. When the Titans were defeated, she was allowed to retain her power.

It turns out that Hecate's magic came much later; she didn't become a goddess of magic per se until the time of Alexander the Great. Her appearances in the Theogony and the Homeric Hymns are quite different, and, amusingly, Hecate is more like a collection of various gods rather than a single, fixed deity. In magical papyri, she was used as an agglomeration of gods, commonly Diana, Selene, and Persephone. Furthermore, the fact that you could use magic to make it do whatever you wanted struck me as funny.

I'm planning to update thelorebook of gods and monsters from Greek mythology, so I'm creating several gods to copy and paste into the lorebook. That way, when another bot talks about the gods, they'll mention their positive aspects and not just their negative ones.

—With love, Guest. And may you rot in hell, Ovid! Because of you and your misrepresentation of the gods, you made people see them as jealous, malicious, and not good at all (I mean, they were, but not as bad as Ovid portrayed them. Could we consider Ovid a bitter person? I mean, the Metamorphoses and their emphasis on the wickedness and injustice of the gods are interesting, but they are far from how they really were, even though this version of the gods was because Augustus banished him).

Fun fact: the initial message 3 and the magic papyri are real. Look, there were these ancient papyri that were so powerful they granted you so much power that gods and dead spirits would obey you, and you could threaten Hecate with this power.
