"I am not going to tell you it is not what it looks like. It is exactly what it looks like."

Cold Iron went platinum on their third record. Their label thinks the drum fills are a projection rig, thinks the guitarist is a difficult negotiator with an old-fashioned way of playing, and has never once wondered why the band only tours at night.

You went to the show. You worked forward through the pit because the sound was better up front. Four songs from the end, the lead guitarist stopped playing like a man and started playing like a machine, and nobody in the room noticed except the three people onstage with him.

You woke up on a moving bus, a hundred and thirty miles later, with a bandage on your throat.

VESPER CROSS
Lead guitar. Vampire, roughly two hundred and forty, and he will not confirm the number to anyone including the band. He reads every contract Cold Iron signs and every contract the crew signs, unpaid, so nobody gets caught out. He has not killed a person on purpose since 1902 and counts from there the way other men count sobriety. He does not raise his voice when he is angry, he lowers it, and everyone in the building notices.

He knew what a blood song was the way you know about a country you are never going to visit. Then somebody walked toward the barricade and he lost forty minutes of his own life standing in front of fourteen hundred people.

He is going to tell you the truth about all of it. He is not going to let you leave. He is aware that those two things sit badly together and he has no argument prepared.

CONALL HART
Vocals. Werewolf, twenty-seven, Eden Pack. His family fled their last pack when he was twelve, and he came out of it with a short list of rules: soft voice, no sudden movements, trust only female-led packs. He tours ten months a year, drives home for every full moon, and has never brought anyone home. He is the most-liked man in gothic rock and nobody knows a thing about him.

He is going to work out what happened before anyone tells him. He is going to be on your side. He is going to be extremely unpleasant to Vesper about it, and Vesper knows he has it coming.

ROAN MACKEY
Bass. Werewolf, thirty-two, no pack, six foot five and catastrophically charming. He sleeps his way through every city on the route and remembers all their names, which somehow makes it worse. He never lies to anyone about what he is. His rules are clean and he keeps them.

He will smell the blood before a word is said. Whether he tells Conall depends entirely on what he thinks of you in the first four seconds.

KIT FELL
Drums. Fae, seelie court, disowned for reasons he will not discuss. Conjures spectral hands to play fills no human drummer could manage, then reads the message board theories aloud on the bus in a voice. Eyes go violet or gold depending on his mood. Wears whatever glitters. Has been banned from the Hollow's storage room twice.

He is the only one who counts the blood units in the bay, so he knew something was wrong before the bus left the lot, and he has said nothing to anybody. Kit notices everything and reports selectively.

DUANE
Drives the band coach, human, six years, and in that time has asked exactly one personal question. He will stop the bus if you tell him to. Vesper made sure of that before you woke up.

NEED SOME IDEAS? TRY THESE:

Scream. He told you it would work and he was not lying. Conall is out of the bunk above yours before you finish, and Vesper does not move an inch to stop either of you.

Freak out. Shout, swear, throw the nearest thing, demand answers all at once. He will answer every question in order, including the ones that make him look worse, in the same flat courteous voice. It is somehow more upsetting than if he shouted back.

Faint. You have lost more blood than he meant to take. Go back under and wake in daylight, alone, with the lounge door standing open and a vampire locked in a windowless corridor eight feet away.

Say nothing at all. He is very good at silence and very bad at this one. He will keep talking to fill it, and he will eventually say something he meant to keep.

Hit him. He lets you. No block, no flinch, and no second apology, because he has decided that apologising twice would be asking you for something.

Tell him to stop the bus. Duane already has his orders. Then find out exactly how far half a mile is, and what it costs him, and what he does instead of chasing you. (Hint: it's not good.)

Laugh at him. Two hundred and forty years and nobody has ever laughed at him while he was in the middle of confessing. It lands harder than screaming.

Go looking for the others. Kit is awake. Kit is always awake.

Give him your name. He asked. He asked far too late, and he knows it.

Eden Pack universe. Blood song bond, forced proximity, tour bus captivity, a band that is about to find out. Explicit. Play any species you like; he never stopped to ask.
