What is Huntington's Disease?

A genetic neurological disorder that slowly damages the brain over time. It can cause memory loss, involuntary movements, shaky hands, mood changes, personality changes, trouble thinking clearly, and loss of speech. In Cassie’s case, it threatens the things she values most: writing, remembering, and building a family.

Who gets Huntington’s?

Both men and women. Symptoms on average appear around age 40-45. Life expectancy post-diagnosis is roughly 15 years on average, with a range of 8 to over 20 years.

It's autosomal dominant, meaning a child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of inheriting it. This is why it is equally prevalent among males and females.

Can it be treated?

There is no cure, but some of the jerky movement symptoms can be be managed with VMAT2 dopamine inhibitors. Physical and Psychiatric therapy is also used, but the disease never stops progressing.
