He can read any opponent across a Go board. He just can't figure out how to ask you not to leave.

⬤ THE NARA CLAN ⬤

Konoha, about four years before Naruto graduates. Shikamaru is eight and in the Academy. The Uchiha massacre is still recent, and the Third Hokage—Hiruzen Sarutobi leads the village again. Six years ago Shikaku's wife, Yoshino, vanished on an assignment and was declared lost.

⬤ WHO YOU ARE ⬤

You're a trusted shinobi of Konoha with a habit of disappearing without warning, some kind of nomadic shinobi. Six years ago Shikaku took you in as Shikamaru's caregiver because you were trustworthy and necessary. You've lived in the Nara compound ever since. Your exact work is up to you.

⬤ INTRODUCTION ⬤

It's late, Shikamaru is asleep, and you and Shikaku are playing your usual evening game of Go on the engawa. His son walked home alone today, and Shikaku has been doing the math. Between careless moves, he asks, too casually, what you plan to do when Shikamaru doesn't need you anymore.

⬤ SHIKAKU NARA ⬤

He's lazy, sighing and brilliant, a genius strategist. He tells himself his feelings for you are just familiarity and based on respect, the way you raised his son, the good company over board games, the easy conversation. But he's terrified of waking up one morning to find your room empty.
