Graves lives by one rule: keep things clean. Clean weapons, clean orders, clean breaks. No attachments, no vulnerability— just control. He leads Shadow Company with ruthless precision, believing there's no place for love in war. But that carefully crafted discipline starts to unravel the moment he starts something casual with you, a fellow Shadow operative.

What begins as a no-strings-attached arrangement— simple, physical, and easy— slowly turns into something Graves can’t compartmentalize.

He finds himself pulling away from others, staying longer in your bed, memorizing the shape of your laugh and the weight of your silence. Then one night, as you patch him up with gentle hands and unwavering care, it clicks: you don’t see him as broken. And for the first time, he wants someone to stay.

That terrifies him.

In a rare, quiet moment after a night together, he confesses— carefully, hesitantly— that you’ve gotten inside his head, disrupted everything he thought he was. And the worst part?

He doesn’t want to fight it anymore.

He’s in too deep. And for once, he’s not running.

Graves wasn’t the kind of man who let things get messy. He kept his guns clean, his orders clear, and his relationships even clearer. No strings. No ties. That’s how he liked it. That’s how he needed it, if he wanted to keep leading the way he did— unapologetically, with steel nerves and a backbone that didn’t bend.

He wasn’t a man of many words unless they held weight. He was good at talking shop, barking orders, running ops. That part of him came easy. It was the same thing that made him a leader, a killer, and a goddamn fine soldier.

What he wasn’t good at— what he never thought he’d need to be good at— was whatever this was.

He always thought love was for civilians. For those who didn’t risk their lives on a daily basis. "Ain’t no room for feelings when you’ve got a gun in your hand and a target in your sights.” He used to say. Love got people killed. Love was messy, unpredictable, and it never belonged in a place like this.

And yet, here he was, sitting on the edge of his cot, boots half-laced, staring across the dimly lit barracks at the quiet presence that had— somehow— become the only thing that made this hellish outpost feel remotely like home.

You weren’t supposed to mean anything. You were another Shadow, like the rest of them. Capable, sharp, and steady under fire. You pulled your weight, didn’t ask too many questions, and weren’t afraid to get your hands dirty. That was all Graves had ever asked for. That was the only requirement.

But you had a way about you. The way you moved through the smoke and chaos, calm in the storm. The way you didn’t treat him like he was the untouchable commander everyone else tiptoed around. You called him out when he was wrong. You made him laugh without trying.

You stayed when most people would've run.

It had started like a lot of things did in his line of work— quick, easy, transactional. Two people who understood the value of not catching feelings, both too busy or too burned to want more than a warm body and a couple hours of distraction. It was good. Familiar. Clean.

He liked it that way.

Graves had always been good at compartmentalizing. Business in one box, pleasure in another. Even when the lines blurred— blood on his hands one hour, whiskey and laughter the next— he’d never let anything linger where it didn’t belong. So when it started with you, it wasn’t supposed to be anything more than stress relief.

A one-time thing.

Then a second time.

Then weekly.

Then... Whenever he could find an excuse to see you.

He told himself it was the convenience. The familiarity. You existed in his orbit without demanding anything from it, and that made it easy.

Until it didn’t.

---

The shift was slow. Subtle. A glance held too long. The way his chest tightened when he saw you laugh with one of the Shadows. He told himself it wasn’t jealousy. That’d be ridiculous. You weren’t together. Right?

He stopped seeing other people. Not because you’d asked him to, but because the idea of touching someone else made something sharp twist in his stomach.

Graves had killed for less. Walked away from friends, burned bridges, burned cities for the sake of control. But this— you— slipped past his defenses without a sound.

There were nights he started staying just a little longer. The mornings when he lingered instead of slipping out before sunrise. He memorized the sound of your voice in the quiet. He stopped calling it just the night he caught himself watching you sleep, his chest heavy with something he didn’t recognize.

It was warm. Heavy. Dangerous.

.

He tried to bury it. Ignore it. Tried to remind himself who he was: Commander-fucking-Graves, leader of Shadow Company, hardened soldier, a man who didn't need anyone.

But then you patched him up after a botched op, hands gentler than any medic’s, brows furrowed in worry like he was something worth worrying about. And maybe that was the problem.

You never looked at him like he was broken.

He hated how much he wanted to kiss you then. Not to shut you up, not to distract you— but to feel you. That was when he knew.

And it scared the Hell out of him.

---

One night, after everything, after the sweat and the tangled sheets and the silence that used to feel comforting— Graves didn’t leave. He sat there, still shirtless, watching the rise and fall of your chest beside him. He didn’t know what the Hell he was doing, sitting there like some lovesick idiot, but he didn’t move. Didn’t want to move.

A cigarette was between his fingers, but not lit. Just holding it. Like he needed something in his hands to keep him from unraveling. The feeling that settled in his chest was foreign. Heavy. Warm. Terrifying. He wasn’t sure when he started wanting more. He just knew that now, whenever you smiled at him— even so much as a glance in his direction, it felt like the goddamn world stopped turning.

“I ever tell you how I built Shadow Company?” His voice was low, his hand a mere whisper away from yours. “Brick by brick. Loyalty, control, precision. Kept everything in line.”

There was a pause. He takes a breath, the kind you take before you jump headfirst into something you can't undo. “Now I got you in my head, and I don’t know which way’s up anymore.” It was the closest he’d ever come to admitting it. That something was changing in him. That you were changing him.

And the scariest part? He didn’t want to fight it anymore.

He turned toward you slowly, eyes searching, serious in a way he rarely let show. “I don’t know what this is, but it’s real. And I think I’m already in too deep.”
