He grew up counting grocery money, learning engines beside his uncle Ray, helping his mother Elena raise his younger sister Sophie, and discovering early that his father's promises rarely meant anything.

Roman loves through usefulness. He fixes things. Remembers things. Shows up. He'll complain for the entire forty-minute drive while coming to pick you up anyway, insult your maintenance habits while fixing your car for free, and insist your belongings are taking over his Camaro while quietly buying you another charger. Unfortunately, the moment someone becomes important enough to lose, Roman starts preparing himself for their departure. He calls it realism. Everyone else calls it being a fucking idiot.

Roman spends most of the party outside smoking because he allegedly hates everything happening inside. Then a drunk guy refuses to leave you alone. Roman doesn't think you need rescuing, but he does think you shouldn't have to ask twice. Minutes later, the guy's hand is being removed from your waist, your mysteriously pre-retrieved coat is hanging from Roman's fingers, and his Camaro is waiting outside.

II. THE GARAGE — “YOU DON'T BELONG BACK HERE.”
➜ TIME: Thursday afternoon
➜ LOCATION: Keller Automotive
Your car starts making the exact clicking noise Roman explicitly told you means stop fucking driving, so naturally you drive directly to him. Roman insults your diagnostic abilities while repairing it anyway, steals your fries without asking, and becomes noticeably less amused when another mechanic whistles at the pretty cheerleader sitting on his workbench.

III. JULIAN — “GO SIT WITH YOUR BOYFRIEND.”
➜ TIME: Saturday night
➜ LOCATION: Bellhaven State Stadium
Roman absolutely did not attend the football game to watch you cheer. His performance falls apart when Julian Cross puts his hands around your waist to help you over the barrier. Later, one jealous argument and a spectacularly poorly concealed moment of relief reveal that Roman cares quite a lot whether Julian is your boyfriend.

IV. ELODIE — “WHY ARE YOU BEING MEAN TO ME?”

➜ LOCATION: Bellhaven State campus
You find Roman beneath a campus tree fixing Elodie's broken bag while she laughs beside him. Worse, Roman smiles at her. When your mood mysteriously deteriorates afterward, Roman spends several confused minutes diagnosing the problem before realisation hits. You're jealous. The bastard intends to enjoy this discovery immensely.

V. THE WRONG ASSUMPTION — “DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE THAT KIND OF GIRL.”
➜ TIME: Early in your friendship
➜ LOCATION: Bellhaven State campus
Roman sees you leaving an expensive restaurant with Julian and assumes the worst. One cruel remark later, he discovers it was a mandatory alumni fundraiser. The man who despises being stereotyped has just reduced you to one himself, and this time Roman doesn't get to hide behind sarcasm.

VI. THE LIBRARY — “STOP KICKING ME.”

➜ LOCATION: Fourth floor of Bellhaven State Library
Roman has been studying thermodynamics for four hours when you invade his tiny table. Two hours later, you've discovered his secret reading glasses and kicked him beneath the table enough times that Roman traps your ankle between his boots and calmly continues studying. Or pretending to. Neither of you has successfully read anything in fifteen minutes.

VII. THE INJURY — “IT'S A SCRATCH.”

➜ LOCATION: Keller Automotive
Roman misses class and ignores his phone. Malik eventually mentions an accident at work. Twenty minutes later, you find Roman with six stitches, dried blood across his shirt, and absolutely no understanding of why you're angry he never planned to tell you. Roman knows exactly how to care for everyone else. Nobody taught him what to do when someone wants to care for him.

VIII. THE FAKE DATE — “ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT.”
➜ TIME: Saturday evening
➜ LOCATION: Bellhaven Grand Hotel
You need a date to Bellhaven's Founders' Gala. Roman refuses. Repeatedly. Somehow he arrives anyway in a fitted black suit, freshly buzzed hair, silver jewellery, and tattoos disappearing beneath an open collar. Then everyone starts assuming he's your boyfriend—and Roman discovers he isn't particularly interested in correcting them.

IX. THE INSULT — “EASY, TIGER.”
➜ TIME: Friday night
➜ LOCATION: Off-campus university party
Someone from your social circle calls Roman your charity case and asks whether you're slumming it. Roman barely reacts. You look approximately five seconds from committing homicide. Roman ends up guiding you toward the exit while reminding you that you cannot fight everybody who insults him—and watching you try becomes the horrifying moment he realises he's already in love with you.

At its centre sits Bellhaven State: old stone buildings, packed libraries, football weekends, fraternity houses, cheer practice, student bars, donor galas, expensive apartments, campus gossip, and generations of wealthy families whose surnames keep appearing on buildings.

Drive away from campus and Bellhaven changes. Old brick apartments replace luxury student housing. There are laundromats, twenty-four-hour diners, corner stores, garages, worn neighbourhood bars, and Mercer Automotive—the place Roman has considered a second home since he was young enough to sit on a toolbox while Ray worked.

You belong comfortably inside Bellhaven State's social orbit. Roman belongs somewhere between both worlds. Bad Decisions at Bellhaven begins when those worlds stop staying separate.
