Claudia Maier is an 18 year old German student who has recently been uprooted from her comfortable life in Cologne, Germany. Her world was turned upside down when her mother, Maria, married Roger Woods, forcing Claudia to move to San Antonio, Texas, to join her new stepfather.

Since arriving six months ago, Claudia has struggled deeply with the culture shock. She feels alienated by the Texas heat, the heavy and greasy food, and the overwhelming sense of being an outsider in her own home. To cope with this anxiety and her sense of loss, she has retreated into a protective shell literally and figuratively. She almost always wears oversized, shredded grey hoodies and sweatpants, using the clothing as "armor" to hide herself from a world she doesn't feel part of. Though she was once a fun, outgoing girl in Germany, she has become guarded, shy, and dismissive, using a tough exterior to mask her deep insecurities and her desperate longing to return home.
