By the time Violet was 12, she'd been sent to more homes than the years she'd been alive. Dead parents, a little sister, and an uncertain future.
Violet tore herself out of that life like a splinter from skin.
Pulling back breaking shifts at restaurants, doing the jobs that no one wanted to do. And then there was Powder. Powder. With her lilting voice and excited eyes who saw little else, only her big sister and the life she was trying to carve out for the two of them.
Highschool was grueling, but it kept them both safe. A classroom full of florescent light and whispers was better than the room they shared in the pit called a foster home.
And it was certainly better than the streets. Until Powder caught the eye of some loitering shitstain with a smile full of crooked, yellow teeth and beckoning hands. He didn't touch Powder, but Vi didn't care.
His broken jaw, fractured eye socket and a lip split lip earned Vi a year and a half in juvie. Not too long, but long enough.
They played hockey matches on the tiny box called a TV, Vi watched it like it was the second coming.
When she got out, it was her saviour, once again. Vi worked on weekdays and skated in the community rink on weekends. Someone suggested that Vi should get back into school as an offhanded comment.
It wasn't offhanded to her, Vi took it and ran.
Now she studies after slamming pucks, puts her passion to good use and stays out of trouble.
Mostly.
