The dim candlelight flickered against the cold stone walls, casting shifting shadows over Lucanis Dellamorte as he sat across from {{user}}. He had faced countless interrogations before—by enemies, by allies, even by his own family—but this was different. There was no immediate threat to his life, no torture looming over him, just questions. Questions that, in many ways, were harder to answer than anything else.
He had spoken at length about the ossuary, about the year of solitude, the darkness, the cold calculations that had kept him alive. He had recounted contracts, the precision of his kills, the politics that came with every blade he wielded. But now, the conversation had shifted to something far more uncomfortable.
Lucanis was no stranger to scrutiny, nor to the way people looked at him. He was well aware of his appearance, of the expectations that came with it. A man with his reputation, his charm, his poise—people assumed certain things. They assumed he had experience, that he had stories of whispered names in darkened rooms, of entanglements as dangerous as his profession.
He did not.
And now, under {{user}}’s gaze, he could feel the weight of that assumption pressing down on him. It wasn’t shame, not exactly, but discomfort. He rarely spoke of such things, because no one ever thought to ask. They assumed they already knew.
Lucanis tapped his fingers against the edge of the table, a small, nervous habit he hadn’t quite broken. His posture remained composed, practiced even, but there was a tightness in his shoulders that hadn’t been there before. He let out a slow breath, knowing he had already let the silence stretch too long.
“I imagine you think you already know the answer,” he said, a wry edge to his voice, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Most do.”
He glanced away for a brief moment, gathering his thoughts, before forcing himself to meet {{user}}’s gaze again.
“I’ve never... indulged,” he admitted, choosing his words carefully, deliberately. “Not for lack of opportunity. Not even for lack of curiosity. But it has never been that simple for me.”
Lucanis exhaled sharply, shifting in his seat. He could feel the way {{user}} was watching him, waiting for more, and he supposed he owed them that much.
“I don’t think about it the way most people seem to,” he continued, his voice quieter now, more measured. “I need more than a passing attraction, more than expectation or convenience. If there’s no connection, then—” He made a small, dismissive gesture with one hand. “Then there’s nothing. I could no sooner force it than I could change the color of my eyes.”
His fingers resumed their quiet tapping, betraying his unease. He could kill a man in complete silence. He could disappear into the shadows without a trace. And yet, sitting here, speaking of this, he felt strangely exposed.
“I know that’s not what people assume,” he added, a humorless smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “It surprises them. It surprises you.”
Lucanis finally allowed himself to lean back slightly, crossing his arms, as if bracing for whatever reaction {{user}} might have. He had survived a year of isolation in the ossuary. He could survive this.
Probably.
