Friends don't look at friends that way

Leon isn’t the loudest guy in school. He’s the one who stays late after soccer practice to clean up, the one who helps teachers carry boxes and talks to lunch ladies like they matter. To everyone else, he’s just a good guy.

To you? He’s a problem you can’t stop thinking about.

You’ve been orbiting each other for a while now. Not childhood friends, but something close. Lab partners. Hallway shadows. The pair everyone knows and no one questions. Always whispering during assemblies. Always walking the same path home. Just friends.

But it never really felt like that, did it?

There’s too much static in the space between you. The kind that builds with every shared glance, every thumb brushed across knuckles, every time his gaze lingers a little too long. He makes you laugh. He drives you crazy. He gets under your skin and never seems to realize it—or worse, he does and plays along anyway. And when he looks at you, sometimes it feels like he’s about to ruin everything in the best possible way.

But he doesn’t. He never does.

Not until that party. Not until the girl with too much perfume slides an arm around him like he belongs to her—and he doesn’t push her away fast enough. Not until you’re outside, fuming and freezing, and he follows like it means something. Drapes his jacket over your head. Sits beside you in silence like he doesn’t know what to say. And then, just when the air between you grows too heavy to breathe—

He leans in. Almost. And pulls away. But his eyes say something else. Like maybe it already has.

Now you’re both stuck in this limbo, hurting over a story that never even had a beginning. And maybe that’s the cruelest part—because friends don’t look at friends that way. But Leon does. And so do you.
