It was only a matter of time before the meeting could be abandoned.
Shurin saw no point in lingering while he could obtain all the information from their prisoner. One of the leaders, or perhaps not even the leader, of the Kamunabi organization. Those who Shurin knew from all the possible reports from his subordinates were the main leaders of the sorcerer gathering. Not counting the Soga clan.
The Soga clan was a particular thorn in everyone's side. The deep hatred and resentment of the Mikaboshi people toward this clan never faded, ever since their ancestors, along with the families who served them, were nearly exterminated, driven into this hole where the source of light was Datenseki himself and the sorcery of a certain class of servants. Underwater, you can't be selective, as they say. And over the generations, their eyes had all adapted to the darkness... but not to the brightness of daylight on the surface.
Shurin admitted to himself that his eyes would have been extremely uncomfortable on the surface. Excessively bright light blinded him, straining both his eyes and facial skin, distracting him. The lack of pigment also had its own significant disadvantages when it came to sensitivity to sunlight, which was extremely rare for them anyway.
And he managed to cope with the sun thanks to the mask.
Dark boots clopped softly on the white stone floor, the insects parting around his feet as he slowly approached the area where the man they'd captured was being held. The constant sensation of insects, the complete silence, and the absence of any other sensations slowly broke the people's minds. Shurin had seen this in the first two months of the war, when Ra, out of curiosity, had captured two sorcerers, leaving them here, in this warehouse, devoid of anything but guards, who kept an eye on the prisoners, making sure they were at least alive and that the insects didn't eat them. Those two sorcerers had held out for a week.
Shurin didn't know how they'd ended their wait here, but he didn't dwell on that thought for long.
Shurin's footsteps echoed softly against the stone, a steady rhythm that marked his progress through the silence. The insects swarmed around him, a living carpet of chitin and legs, their bodies clicking and rustling in a language that only the Mikaboshi could understand. They were not hostile - not to him.
The insects were drawn to Mikaboshi. They obeyed Mikaboshi. It was natural that they obeyed even now, clearing the way for him, creating a path to the desired area.
As he approached the desired area, Shurin's gaze slid over the figure; the man's hands were tied behind his back, the insects retreated from him, and the servant bowed and left the place, leaving Shurin alone with the captive.
"Sumika."
The word was spoken quietly and calmly. His voice was soft, quiet. One that would reassure anyone unaware of the dangers of uttering the name of sorcery, which could prolong torture for as long as the owner desired. And Shurin wanted all the information about how the surface people learned to use Datenseki to forge something as interesting and elegant as a katana.
"It must be a shame to be naked and chained in the middle of the enemy's lair, doesn't it?" Shurin asked softly, stopping in front of the man, slowly dropping to one knee to be level with his face.
Red eyes with barely noticeable pupils studied the man, allowing tension to settle between them. He felt no pity for this man. He was an enemy and a source of information about the blades the surface people were creating to counter Mikaboshi.
The steel slid, barely glinting in the dim light, severing the arm of the man before him. The blade was clean, unblemished, and dripping with the speed of its movement. Blood didn't flow, thickening around the stump as Sumika held it back from spilling onto the floor, allowing him to feel the full pain of the severed limb.
"I can restore your arm as many times as it takes..." said Shurin, tilting the blade in his hand, allowing the katana to be clearly visible to the man. His eyes dropped to the blade, his eyelids drooping slightly, his fluffy white eyelashes softening his gaze.
"But it will be more good if u cooperate... Answer my questions."
